Batchat Round 1 2013/14 information

If you have any match reports, junior, senior, men, women, masters, social, anything, send it in to by 9pm Tuesdays to get into the week's issue.

Welcome to the first Newsletter for 2013/14, this season we have moved to a new online membership and new website solution from IMG Sports Technology Group. No information is carried over from the existing system so we need all Men’s, Women's, Masters and junior players to register themselves online ASAP. You just need to register in order to take the field. We would prefer payment at registration but payment can be made over the coming weeks. Members have many payment options available, including online credit card, manual credit card via form, EFT, cheque & cash, the club appreciate payment as early as possible.

The 13/14 season looks to have started well. We have had good numbers at preseason training including many new faces. A number of U16 and U18 players have joined our sessions at Surrey Park and Valhalla and we are certain they would have gained valuable tips from our coaching staff and senior players.

We would like to particularly all welcome new players to the club. Sam Boone has joined the club as an assistant coach to Mat Kent and has impressed many with his work ethic and skills. A number of other senior players have joined the club including Scott Moore from Sunshine and Adam Burton from Malvern. It is great to see these guys showing us some flashy skills and giving tips to the younger players over recent weeks. Frank Nigro from North Balwyn and Ben Murphy from Heathmont have also been down at training. Welcome to all of you.

A number of new juniors have also joined the club including several talented kids who rolled up to our Come and try days. With 1 or 2 weeks left before junior games are scheduled to start, coaches are putting our boys and girls through skills training and hopefully establishing MCC stars of the future. I would like to thank our new junior coaches Alex Hondo, Campbell Wiggins and Sean Pascoe who have volunteered to pass on their significant knowledge to our boys and girls.

Our womens team also have a few new members, welcome to players  Jacqueline, Sophia, Betty, Emily and Marnie who has stepped up from last years U14 team and along with our Australian U18 player Rachel Limburg, is the first of a crop of talented girls coming through from our junior section. Welcome too to Stephen Hehir who has joined as an Assistant Coach.

We have had changes on our committee also including changing of a few roles and new members joining the Committee. Charmaine Neate has taken on the role of Treasurer with gusto and Steven Pahos has been busy organising club fundraising initiatives. Our social committee have been hard at work and have put in place a number of functions to be run over the year. The first function is on the 13th of October when our 1st 9 play their first home game against Sandringham. All club supporters, families and past players are welcomed to a luncheon and a BBQ outside before the games on Sunday. We hope to have a number of supporters hang around for the main game at 3.30pm.

Quite a bit of work has been done on the diamond over recent weeks. We have had our bull pen reconditioned including a new bullpen pitching mound and our batting box and mound have also had an upgrade. The Whitehorse council is organising the re-grassing of 1st and 3rd baselines and a re-grassing of the area in front of the pitcher’s mound. It has been pleasing to see our senior players pitching in and giving a hand. Andy, Rook, Campbell and Steven Pahos reconditioned 1st base on Sunday like a well drilled road crew. In a few weeks, we expect the entire diamond to be looking like Yankee Stadium. I want to single out Larry Grant who has been mowing the infield over the winter months and along with Tom Arthur will keep the place looking good all summer.

Our final senior training before games is set for Thursday night, please come down and get a few last minute ground balls and cuts in before facing Cheltenham this week. We will run a BBQ after training and the bar will be open for a cool drink afterwards. Senior teams for the first game will be read out after training. We will also have merchandise for sale including new slickers that are due to arrive tomorrow.

Could I also single out Stephen Gerwing who has been working for weeks installing our new website. This has been a major challenge for Baseball Victoria and its clubs. We are blessed to have someone with Stephen’s experience and passion putting this in place for us. The new system has presented many issues with registration and data base management which has made communication more difficult than previous. However, I am reliably informed that we are ahead of most other clubs in our implementation. Thanks Stephen.

That’s it, it’s up to all of you now. I want wish everyone involved at every level, good luck for the season. Please treat each other, the opposition and the umpires with respect, listen to your coaches. Remember at all times, you are representing your team and the club. Have fun and enjoy our great game, the club is poised for a momentous 125th year.
