Batchat Round 2

If you have any match reports, junior, senior, men, women, masters, social, anything, send it in to demonsbc@yahoo.com by 9pm Tuesdays to get into the week's issue.

Dear FIRSTNAME,

Welcome to the second Newsletter for 2013/14, the Mens Seniors kicked off the season last weekend with draws for the firsts, seconds and fifths. While the thirds and fourths came up against some quality opposition from Cheltenham.

The Juniors and Women's competitions start this weekend and we have a big day planned for Sunday at Surrey Park starting with a Past Players luncheon, an afternoon BBQ and then dinner after the 1sts Opening Home game against Sandringham.

A timely reminder that all players should be registered before taking the field this season, it only takes a couple of minutes and it will assist you to keep up to date with activities around the Club.

Junior Development is a big focus this year and Guy Flaherty is continuing with these sessions on Thursdays and Sundays focussing initially on catching and pitching, for details, see the news item below.

Following junior training this week, the coaches will be placing players into teams so make sure you attend training so that you get placed in the most appropriate team. Junior fixtures are out and are on the web site here but selection into teams will be announced later in the week.

Match Reports

1st Nine drew 2-2

With both sides boasting even greater depth coming into the season, this developed into a pitcher-dominated contest after the early innings, when a solo homer by Melbourne Manager Matt Kent drew an immediate two-run response from the Rustlers.

With a double in the fifth, Kent again featured in offence as the Demons tied it up at two apiece – a scoreline that would remain unchanged before the game was called due to fading light after ten.

Both clubs clearly have some of the best arms in the league and the pitchers on both sides lived up to that expectation, although Melbourne would be concerned about an apparent injury that drove starter Campbell Wiggins from the contest mid-game.

“Wiggins was really good at the start,” Cheltenham Manager Matthew Tayler told Baseball Victoria. “And we struggled with Andy Mann after that.”

Although out-hitting Melbourne eleven to six, the Rustlers were not quite able to gain a break and were thwarted in the bottom of ten with two men on base.

“Hayden (Dingle) went three from four and Ben Leslie had a couple of hits,” Tayler said, “though we just didn’t get the offence when we needed it.”

“Sticks really hurt us today, but otherwise our pitching was very good. Blake Cunningham gave us a solid start, Lachlan Madden was impressive in the sixth and seventh and Ryan Bean finished the game off well.”

“I thought he (Bean) looked good, especially his off-speed,” Tayler said. “His cutter and slider kept their hitters off balance."

Expecting a tough contest coming in, Manager Tayler was not disappointed in that regard. Nor even in the result - which could have gone either way on a swing of the bat.

“Melbourne and Blackburn are going to be very tough in our group,” he said. “Both have some great pitching and Melbourne showed that today."

“I thought that 2-2 was a pretty good start against a quality club.”

With this group already producing interesting results, Cheltenham plays host to Upwey on Sunday and Melbourne will be at home to Sandringham.

CHELTENHAM         0 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 (2) 1 error

2nd Nine drew 3-3

Another tightly fought pitchers duel, down 0-2 going into the 8th, we scored 3 runs, Cheltenham scored one in the bottom of the frame but an out at the plate saved the game and it stayed 3-3.

3rd Nine lost 11-5

4th Nine lost 15-4

5th Nine drew 5-5

It was a great day to start the season and 14 Demons showed up to play. Jonte DeZwart did a good job on the mound, only giving up ground balls and pop flies thorough 3 innings; and Stephen Gerwing closed out the last 3.  Unfortunately, defensive errors allowed Ormond to score 5.  Our bats struggled as well as we trailed 5-0 to start the 5th.  However, we finished strong scoring 1 in the fifth and 4 in the 6th to finish with a draw.

The highlights of the game came in the bottom of the 6th when Ethan VanderHoff came to the plate with the bases loaded and cleared them with a double in the right-center gap. Stephen Gerwing then traded places with him on 2nd to tie the game.  Unfortunately the game ended in a draw with a bases loaded K.

Hits: Chao Shih -1B; Ethan VanderHoff - (2) 1B, 2B + 3 RBI; Trent Grabham - 1B; Stephen Gerwing - 2B + 1 RBI

Runs: Trent Grabham, Frank Nigro, Chao Shih, Hudson Gerwing, Ethan VanderHoff
