Match Reports

1st Nine won 6-5

Article by Kingsley Collins:

In a game effectively played in two halves, the Royals were in control through the early innings before impressive import Steve Hill left the mound and the Demons found some offence to gain a break.

With Tony Cevec and David Armstrong producing in offence, the Royals posted three in the top of five for a lead that evaporated rather quickly as Melbourne replied with two in the equaliser and then surged to a lead through the seventh and eighth.

When Sandy mounted a late challenge after Andy Mann (pictured) had been relieved by Melbourne import Brent Buffa, Alex Hondromatidis was called on to close out the game, with the Royals falling just short against one of the early pennant favourites.

A right-armed pitcher and left-handed hitter, Buffa has played American Indy League baseball and more recently suited up for HSV Stealers in the German League.
“As usual, Andy was just outstanding for us,” Melbourne Seconds Manager David Simpson told Baseball Victoria.

“We had a few concerns when Brent struggled with his command in the ninth, but we were able to come away with the win against a good young side. Sandy has a bunch of young guys who run and play the short game very well,” he said.

“Their import was very impressive and he threw good spots. We were only able to get away when he came out and Holmes struggled against some of our better hitters.”

Although making more defensive errors that they would have liked, the Demons racked up thirteen hits to seven, with Manager Matt Kent (three) and Buffa (two) doing much of the damage in a game that could easily have gone either way.
Melbourne faces a massive home game against Blackburn on Sunday, while Sandringham will play host to Cheltenham.
SANDRINGHAM 0 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 2 (5) 7 hits, 1 error
MELBOURNE 0 0 0 0 2 0 3 1 x (6) 13 hits, 4 errors

4th Nine won

5th Nine won 13-5

Women's A won 18-1

A great day for the season opener on the home ground at Surrey Park which was a bit breezy but a good day for baseball. We played a good game against the Doncaster Dragons defeating this young and upcoming team who will be a solid team down the track as they have some young talent that I am certain will develop well in the coming years.

Three up three down the top of the first was a great start whilst we put on 3 runs the bottom of the first dig on 3 hits and some good base running. The second inning saw 3 strike outs by Rachel where we came back with 7 runs in the bottom of the inning to move in to a solid lead. Much of the same over the next couple of innings with some good plays in the field by Glenda at first, Marnie at second, Kate taking a good catch in right field and Charmaine doing a great job behind the dish. A good solid hitting effort by all with everyone contributing to the score line. With a tough defence this week to start off the season. Well done ladies and keep up the hard work as we have a tough one coming up next week against the Moorabbin Panthers.

Rachel got the first start for the Lady Demons of the year and went 3 innings giving up 0 earned runs on 0 hits with 1 walk, 0 hpb, and 6 strike outs, an outstanding effort on the day well done Rachel and keep up the hard work. Dominique came on in relief and worked 1 inning giving up 1 earned run on 1 hit with 0 walks, 0 hpb, and 0 strike outs, a great relief effort.

Hits: Dominique & Rachel – 3, Charmaine, Kate & Jess –2, Bec, Alicia, Marnie & Glenda – 1

U18 State won 12-1 vs Newport

This year we have combined with Malvern to form an U18 side, a few of the kids knew each other from winter Baseball but we also had a few boys new to the game. Callum Jackson started on the mound and had a terrific day, stifling the hitters with well located fastballs and some terrific off speed pitches that froze a lot of hitters, Chris Hill did not let anything past behind the dish. Charlie Keyhoe combined with Ethan Vanderhoff with a nice pick out of the dirt at first to finish the first dig. Taylor Field made a nice diving play at second to keep Malvern off the board in the second, and in the third, Henry Jones made a great running and sliding catch at rightfield to finish the third dig. Offensively in our second dig, Hudson Gerwing had a nice hit to left field but was cut off at second trying to stretch it – remember your spikes next time! Henry Jones and Tom Snowden both went deep and Rachel Limburg hit up the middle to combine to score 7 runs on 2 out. Harrison Mollman hit the ball hard to third and forced an error, Taylor Field pitched the last as the rain started to fall but managed to throw enough strikes to finish off the game, a great start to the season with everybody making good contact with the bat and we were excellent in the field, and ran away 12-1 with the win.

U15 Melbourne def Waverley Jaguars 9-2

The junior season got off to a great start with a win by the combined U14/U16 Demons in the Friday Night competition at Waverley. Pitching was strong, with Rei, Macca and Rory restricting the Waverley boys to only a few hits for the game. Liam caught most of the game and was very effective behind the plate. The fielding was also strong and all the players looked dangerous in the box, with Adam driving a pitch back to left-centre to score two early runs and set the tone for the team. A really good start to the competition by all the players.

U14 State - Melbourne lost to Berwick 10-1

In what was to turn into pretty poor conditions, the young U14 team made the trip out to Berwick for the first round of the season. Playing against some strong opponents, the Berwick players eventually overcame an excellent team effort by the Demons, who threatened to score in almost every inning but just couldn't find any two out hits to drive in the many runners left on base. Macca pitched extremely well to keep the Demons within striking distance early before being relieved by Ryan who had to battle the worst of the weather and heavy balls making for a difficult day on the mound. The Berwick pitching was powerful and only Trent, hitting a nice double down the right field line, and Rei crushing a solo homer well over the left field fence were able to make solid contact for the day.
