Batchat Round 10

If you have any match reports, junior, senior, men, women, masters, social, anything, send it in to demonsbc@yahoo.com by 9pm Tuesdays to get into the week's issue.

Dear FIRSTNAME,

Welcome to round 10 of the Newsletter for 2013/14. For most grades we are around the mid point of the season with only a few weeks left before the Christmas break and a chance for all teams to further their finals aspirations.

All 6 Senior Men's teams are currently in their respective top four, with the firsts top of their conference, and the fourths just half a game out of top position. Both Women's teams are in their top four, while the Masters A and C sides are just a game out of the four, while the 3 time premiers, the Masters B team, are on top of their Division. So get down and support the teams who are doing a remarkable job on the field this year.

In Division 1 this week, the firsts backed up their offensive onslaught on the weekend with a 5-1 win in the return encounter against Doncaster. They dealt Doncaster its heaviest loss of the season in picture-perfect conditions at Deep Creek on Sunday. The visitors were off to a flyer and scored in every innings bar one before wrapping the game up in seven 10-0, behind another superb start from Andy Mann (five innings) and support in the form of Brent Buffa and Matt Blackmore.

The seconds, thirds and fourths all had solid wins, while the Masters A lost a tight one, and the Masters B team continue to roll on.

In Division 2 Women's, facing the Springvale Lions who were tied with the Lady Demons for 2nd place, we won a thrilling game Saturday with everyone contributing in some way to this solid win. The Division 3 side were pipped by a couple of runs against Springvale.

The Junior teams have had a tougher time this year with U16's and U14's playing as mostly bottom aged boys, but there are a couple of standout teams. The U15 Friday night team playing in the Waverley competition have been outstanding and are in the running for a top 2 finish, while the U14 Metro team under Brent Buffa have been terrific, sitting in equal second and lead in league in offence. In the U12 Friday night competition all three teams are doing well with the Angels and Dodgers filling the top two positions on the ladder.

Girls training with the Pros event will be held at Melbourne Ballpark on Saturday 21st December from 10.00am – 2.00pm. Cost to the girls is only $25. This is a fantastic initiative by MLB, the ABF, the Melbourne Aces and also BV. The ABF and Melbourne Aces have organised for 16 members of the current Australian Women’s Squad to fly into Melbourne as part of the Aces “Women’s Weekend”, and these girls will coach at the Clinic, along with members of the Victorian Blue Women’s Team.

Christmas Mince Pies are available again as a fundraising initiative and to support one of our Club's supporters. These delicious Fruit Mince Pies are baked at Bread Street Bakery in Hamilton Street Mont Albert, they are available to order @ $15 per dozen from our sponsor Bread Street in Mont Albert.

Make sure you check the umpiring rosters for Seniors and Juniors playing Seniors for the next few weeks up until the Christmas break. It is the players responsibility to swap with another if they are unavailable to umpire. Your name will be shown in red in Team Selections if you are nominated to umpire that week.

There are plenty of social activities around the club leading up to Christmas so keep an eye on the newsletter and website for details - The top of the table firsts team take on one of our main conference rivals at home Sunday 22nd Dec in the final game before the break. The main social function before the break will be the Moonlight and Mistletoe Christmas Cocktail Party, Saturday 21st December 2013 @7PM at the Melbourne Baseball Clubrooms, $30 per ticket ordered online. $40 at the door.

1st Nine won 10-0

Kingsley Collins:

The Demons flexed their offensive muscle to deal Doncaster its heaviest loss of the season in picture-perfect conditions at Deep Creek on Sunday.

The visitors were off to a flyer and scored in every innings bar one before wrapping the game up in seven behind another superb start from Andy Mann (five innings) and support in the form of Brent Buffa and Matt Blackmore.

Making a few uncharacteristic errors that hardly helped their cause, Doncaster had opportunities but was unable to build any momentum.

“It was the complete victory and pretty much our best performance for the season,” Melbourne Assistant Coach David Simpson told Baseball Victoria.

“To wrap it up in seven was a good win after some great individual efforts,” he said. “Sam Boone went something like five from five – probably his best game yet for the club. We were outstanding in defence and we were able to bring guys off the bench into the game.”

“Our pitching was very good again. Andy is tireless and he just did what he does,” Simpson said. “Brent and Matty didn’t give them a sniff towards the end.”

Remaining atop its conference standings, Melbourne continues to strengthen its claims to again being a legitimate contender for Summer League post-season.

“We are developing real depth and are probably a more disciplined side than we were last year,” Simpson said. “Guys have to fight for a spot in this side – that’s a healthy sign.”

With Steele Ratcliffe favoured for the start, Doncaster will be away to Melbourne on Tuesday (Surrey Park, 6.00 PM start) before its away game to Sandringham on Sunday, while Melbourne will follow up with a home game against Essendon on Sunday.

1st Nine midweek won 5-1

The Demons gained an early break and were never headed in posting their eighth win of the season at Surrey Park Tuesday evening.

While the win strengthens Melbourne’s position at the top of the East Group table, it was a setback for the Dragons – whose two wins and eight losses sees them in eleven placing overall with a tough double to play against Sandringham over the next week

3rd Nine won 3-2

4th Nine won 6-4

Another beautiful day at Surrey Park as the sun was shining and a 24° day facing the Springvale Lions who have been playing some good baseball and were tied with us for 2nd place until a thrilling game today whereby we came out on top with an excellent showing everyone contributing in some way to this solid win.

4 up 3 down the first dig with a couple of good plays by Megan at short and a strike out whilst we came back with a couple of hits and a run in the bottom of the 1st for a good start to the game. The second dig they scored one and we scored one to stay on top. The third dig was much the same as we both tacked on a run each with the score now 3-2 our way after 3 innings of good baseball. Top of 4 they scored 2 to go ahead whereby the Mighty Lady D’s pounded the ball for 6 runs in the bottom of the dig on 5 hits. Top of 5 saw the Lions come back with another 2 runs as we had loaded the bases in the bottom and were ready to strike again but the umpire called time and game. A great game of baseball by both clubs today with a good defensive effort by Glenno at 2nd, Bec at 1st, Jess at 3rd,Megan and Dominique at short and the outfield consisting of Jess, Kate and Alice who made her debut with the 1sts this week, well done by all.

Dominique got the start for the Lady D’s and went 4 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 3 hits with 8 walks, 3 hpb, and 2 strike outs, a great effort throwing 115 pitches, well done Nique. Megan came on in relief and worked 1 inning on the mound for the Lady D’s giving up 2 earned runs on 0 hits with 3 walks, 0 hpb, and 0 strike outs, a good effort closing out the game.

We are tied for second on the ladder with Moorabbin so still in the hunt for the flag with a real test coming up next week against Footscray on their home ground who beat undefeated Werribee.

Summary:

Hits: Bec, Charmaine & Dominique – 2; Kate, Alice, Jess S. & Jessica W. – 1

RBIs: Charmaine, Bec & Alice.- 2, Jess S., Dominique & Jessica W. - 1

Box Score:

                1 2 3 4 5 R H E

Melbourne  1 1 1 6 x 9 10 2

Women's B lost 12-10

Masters Division 1 lost 6-5

A tough assignment vs Springvale @ Springvale with 6 regular players out. A couple of last minute calls included John O'Connor who took a number of running catches, and John Anderson off his crutches helped us to stay in the game and only lose to a late innings run by Springvale
