Batchat Round 11

If you have any match reports, junior, senior, men, women, masters, social, anything, send it in to demonsbc@yahoo.com by 9pm Tuesdays to get into the week's issue.

Dear FIRSTNAME,

Welcome to round 11 of the Newsletter for 2013/14. The cocktail party is coming up on Saturday the 21st, tickets are available from the online shop only $30 from the shop or $40 at the door. Also if you need a quick stocking filler for Christmas we have plenty of Short Sleeve Baseball slickers for $45 in range of sizes - visit the shop here. Christmas mince pies are available from our club support Bread Street in Hamilton St, Mont Albert, they are $15 per dozen, they make great gifts and a way of helping them out for a great service they provide during the year.

As we approach the half way point of the season, I thought it might be an opportune time to single out our coaching staff for their time and effort. Our club is growing each season and we rely heavily on the input of each and every coach in all sections. Our junior section is privileged to have a number of experienced senior players who give up their personal time to provide teach our young players.

Please respect that each coach has a multitude of jobs to perform during a game including managing 9-12 children, each with different skill sets, attitudes, expectations and needs. The coach must balance these criteria to provide an adequate level of participation in all positions. This is often not possible in a single game and a coach my prefer to rotate players through fielding positions or batting order over a number of weeks. The coach is also providing and processing information on player skills, game tactics and baseball rules throughout the game.

As junior parents, it is important that you sit back and allow the coach to do his or her job. If they need help, they will ask. Please provide support and encouragement for your child but resist the temptation to provide technical advice during the game. It is likely that the coach is focusing on an area of your childs technique that you may not be. Please allow them to enjoy the game.

Thanks again to our coaching staff, we appreciate the work you are doing and the improvement that has been made so far this season.

David Keyhoe

MCC Baseball Section Chairman

On the field we had good performances by all Senior Men's sides against a quality club in Essendon, the firsts had two one run losses, while the seconds had a narrow loss as well in pitcher dominated contests, while the thirds had a good win, the fourths won in a slugfest and the two Division 4 teams had runaway wins. The Women's A team won a nail biter against Footscray while the Women's seconds had a solid game but went down 12-7.

It was a stellar day for pitchers on both sides in the Division 1 firsts contest, with Gareth Formisano spinning a one-hitter over eight for the Bombers and Andy Mann going deep into the contest – with the sole run coming from an RBI single by Peter Stokes in the seventh. In the midweek game, Brent Buffa (Melbourne) and Hayden Gardner (Essendon) both gave their clubs solid starts, although the Bombers scored in the second after Peter Stokes doubled, advanced on a bunt and scored on a ground ball. Despite tossing an impressive complete game, Buffa copped a hard-luck loss when Brett Tamburrino delivered a two-out hit to score Josh Davies in the bottom of nine.

Girls training with the Pros event will be held at Melbourne Ballpark on Saturday 21st December from 10.00am – 2.00pm. Cost to the girls is only $25. This is a fantastic initiative by MLB, the ABF, the Melbourne Aces and also BV. The ABF and Melbourne Aces have organised for 16 members of the current Australian Women’s Squad to fly into Melbourne as part of the Aces “Women’s Weekend”, and these girls will coach at the Clinic, along with members of the Victorian Blue Women’s Team.

Match Reports

1st Nine lost 1-0

Kingsley Collins:

It was a stellar day for pitchers on both sides, with Gareth Formisano spinning a one-hitter over eight for the Bombers and Andy Mann going deep into the contest – with the sole run coming from an RBI single by Peter Stokes in the seventh after a Tim Sullivan bleeder and a passed ball.

“That was one of the best wins I’ve been associated with during my time at Essendon,” said Assistant Coach Richard King, himself an elite pitcher of another era who was clearly in awe of the work on display for this game.

“Mann threw an absolute blinder over eight and that was without doubt the best game that Gareth has given us. Matt Blackmore threw well for them at the end and, really, the losing side is always pretty stiff in a game like this.”

“Both sides played great defence. It was a game well played by both clubs.”

The win would be especially pleasing for Essendon given that it was coming off some patchy form and was missing several of its regular starting nine, including Brett Tamburrino, Tom Dicker, Josh Davies and Aaron Sayers.

“We had three first-year under eighteens in the lineup today – Jack Giles at second, Marc Sayers at shortstop and Daniel Fornito at leftfield. All of them were outstanding,” King said.

“And Steve Lehmann stepped up for us as DH today.”

Melbourne will have away status against Essendon on Wednesday (Melbourne Ballpark, early) and will be away to Sunshine on Saturday. Essendon will follow the midweek game with a home clash that will test the improving young Sandringham next Sunday.

1st Nine midweek lost 3-2

With a walk-off win over Melbourne in another low-scoring affair, Essendon strengthened its hold on second placing in the West Group, while the Demons – sandwiched between Blackburn and Cheltenham – appear more vulnerable in their conference.

Brent Buffa (Melbourne) and Hayden Gardner (Essendon) both gave their clubs solid starts, although the Bombers scored in the second after Peter Stokes doubled, advanced on a bunt and scored on a ground ball.

After Melbourne Manager Matt Kent launched a solo home run in the top of the fourth, the Dons called Kyle Bedford from the pen to start the fifth.

Having a terrific game, Stokes easily cleared the leftfield wall in the bottom of seven, although Melbourne hit back in the top of nine as closer Luke Abels conceded the tying run on a hit, a wild pitch and a couple of grounders.

Despite tossing an impressive complete game, Buffa copped a hard-luck loss when Brett Tamburrino delivered a two-out hit to score Josh Davies in the bottom of nine.

2nd Nine lost 3-0

3rd Nine won 8-3

4th Nine won 18-16

Div 4 East won 16-6

Div 4 South won 17-4

Women's A won 12-11
Wow what a game, one of those that went back and forth during the whole game and the bonus was that we ended up on top at the end! Welcome to Melanie who had a great game at third then shifting out to centre field as injuries set in during the game which limited the options for us – well done. Welcome also to Jacquie who had a good game as well batting well and filling in at the last minute due to illness – we realise this was tough for all but could not be avoided, thanks for your understanding. A great game by all with the red ink surfacing on only one occasion as we out hit the Doggies 12-7, we need to continue to work on our ball to strike ratio as this is key to ensuring we stay in the hunt. We are in second place on the ladder alone now so need to continue learning and growing to enable us to be in the race for the flag.

First dig was scoreless as both pitchers and defences did well to contain, then we jumped out to a 2 run lead on a timely hit by Narelle with runners on second and third with 2 out. Footscray not to be outdone retaliated with 4 of their own on 4 walks and a hit as we came back with 3 on 3 hits to inch ahead in the top of the 3rd dig whilst the Doggies came back with 1 to level the score at 5 after three innings of play. The Lady D’s were shut out the 4th whereas Footscray scored 2 to go ahead whilst in the top of the 5th we put on 4 runs with three hits and some great base running to go up 9-7 with another 3 to round out our scoring. Footscray tacked on 1 and 3 respectively in the last 2 digs to finish out the game 12-11. This sea saw battle was great to watch and a nail biter to the end. The gals put in a great effort defensively making all bar one of the plays ensuring we didn’t give anything away – well done Ladies.

Narelle got the start for the Lady D’s and went 4 innings giving up 7 earned runs on 4 hits with 10 walks, 1 hpb, and 3 strike outs, a mammoth effort throwing 110 pitches, well done Narelle. Rachel came on in relief and worked 2 innings on the mound for the Lady D’s giving up 3 earned runs on 3 hits with 3 walks, 1 hpb, and 5 strike outs, a fantastic effort closing out the game.

We are now alone in second place so need to continue to improve by working hard at training to stay in the hunt for the flag.

Summary:

Hits: Charmaine – 3, Rachel, Jess W. & Megan – 2; Melanie, Bec & Narelle – 1

RBIs: Charmaine & Megan -3, Jessica W. & Narelle.- 2, Rachel & Bec - 1

Box Score:

Footscray 0, 4, 1, 2, 1, 3 11 Hits 7, Errors 3
Melbourne 0, 2, 3, 0, 4, 3 12 Hits 12 Errors 1

Women's B lost 12-7

With pitchers Jacqui Dickinson and Melanie Keks stepping up to the 1st game, Alice Ryan opened the pitching for the Lady M's and did a great job putting the ball over the plate where Sandy batters put the ball in play and the Melbourne defence made the outs. Momoka Yoshida pitched the last Dig holding the Sandy run count to low numbers.

However, Sandy batters scored 6 runs in the second dig giving them a lead from which Melbourne was unable to recover. There were only 2 Melbourne fielding errors but Sandy had 9 safe hits to clear ground including 2 doubles.
Highlights of the game included a double past centre field by Emily Owens, and singles by Liz Vargiu (2), Betty Tsotsos (2), Momoka, and Brook. Runs to Marnie, Meredith, Brook, Betty and Liz. Betty made a couple of unassisted outs at first and Liz copied at third. Too many assists to first to list :-)

Well done to all the Melbourne players.

Sandringham 2, 6, 3, 3 12 Errors 3 Hits 9
Melbourne 1, 4, 2, 0 7 Errors 2 Hits 7

Junior Match Reports

U18 Melbourne/Malvern Combined defeated by Cheltenham 5 - 7

U16 Melbourne State League defeated by Geelong 2 - 10
The morning began chaotically, with Geelong mistakenly sent to Surrey Park and then returning to Myrtle Park to begin a game twenty minutes late to allow for warm up. However, it was Melbourne who got the rocky start once the game got underway, with our first three pitchers struggling to limit Geelong’s bats or find the zone.

Good individual performances included Cooper, who fielded solidly at short stop, catching a fly ball and sending it to Harvey at first for a double play, batted well with two safe hits from three at bats, and pitched three strike outs to close the game.

Also impressive was a team up between Oliver (pitching) and Xander (catching) to tag out two attempted steals from third, with Xander recovering balls to send them back to Oliver, who had run in to successfully cover home plate.

Ultimately Geelong was the stronger team, with eight hits to Melbourne’s four and their one pitcher throwing just 67 pitches, compared to our collective 143.

Hits went to Cooper (2), Adam (1) and Sean (double); runs went to Adam and Xander, with RBIs to Harvey and Cooper.

These matches are getting too close, needless to say that we just got to the wire, beating a team that tried to run us down in the last couple of innings. Malvern had quite a few pitcher changes , trying to bamboozle us, but we stuck to our guns. Our boys put on a solid defensive display. Hudson did some great all work; batting, fielding and pitching. Blake pitched and honed that ball into the sweet spot gaining quite a few victims. Koby played his usual solid game making greta bat contact. . Tate took 6 catches- terrific effort and good running. Billy performed well especially on field. Tom got so close to smashing that ball into the next suburb. PJ had real focus with the bat, always trying his hardest.. Henry, our very solid catcher, continues to make great contact with the bat. Jasper belted the ball and did some very handy fielding. Ben is not far away from unravelling the stitching off the ball ! Jerry also did some good clean work on the field and in batting. ... So, to great relief, we just got there. Coach Helder was nervous and agitated, so much so, that he was delivering Coach's pitch from the standing position. It was either that, or he figured out that he had a better opportunity of dodging the ball standing, rather than being hit in the crouched position. You know what they say in the US..." One in good shape is better than 2 half working." Well done Dodgers.
