Batchat Round 17

If you have any match reports, junior, senior, men, women, masters, social, anything, send it in to demonsbc@yahoo.com by 9pm Tuesdays to get into the week's issue.

Dear FIRSTNAME,

Welcome to round 17 of the Newsletter. We are now down to only a couple more games to round of the regular season for most Senior and Junior teams. The first nine and third nine are currently in top spot in their divisions while the fourths and Division 4 teams have chances to play finals. The Womens A team and Masters A team have "mathematical" chances of playing finals, while the Masters B team will be looking to make it four in a row.

In Juniors, the U14 Metro team will be playing finals while in the U12 Friday night competition all 3 Melbourne teams should make it through.

Junior presentation night is going to be on the Sunday 16th of March from 4pm, with Seniors Presentation on the night before at the MCG on Saturday 15th of March.

The firsts won their two game series against Upwey FTG in a closely fought tussle, winning both games by a run. Andy Mann and Brent Buffa pitching well, Matty Blackmore picked up the Save in both games. The heat affected most other Senior Men's games on Sunday with only the seconds getting a game in, getting back on the winners list with a 9-7 win.

Match Reports

Upwey FTG V Melbourne 2/2/14 - Won 4-3

A very hot day. Upwey’s pitcher was in tune from the start not allowing us to score a hit until the third inning and our first run.

Upwey were out of the blocks and scored a hit in each of their first 3 inning but getting 2 runs in the fourth with 2 more hits. Our pitcher was Andrew Mann.

At the end of the fourth inning the score was 2-1 in favour of Upwey. Melbourne came back in the fifth inning scoring 2 runs off 4 hits.

In the bottom of the fifth inning Upwey came back with another hit and a run tying the scores at 3 all.

At the top of the 6th inning Melbourne had another hit and took the lead 4-3. Melbourne had another hit at the top of the 7th inning while Upwey managed a hit in the bottom of the 7th & 8th inning but neither team managed another score.

A game where the Pitchers seemed to dominate with slight lapses in concentration during the game allowing Melbourne to win the game despite being outhit 7 hits to Upwey's 9 hits.

Melbourne V Upwey FTG 4/2/14 - Won 6-5

Upwey started aggressively and at the end of their first inning had two hits and two runs on the board thanks to a home run by Mitch Ayres spiraling out to right field. Melbourne came back in a little more pedestrian way and had a hit which produced a run from an earlier base on balls.

In the 2nd Inning for Upwey they score another run from another 2 hits and went on to score a double and two singles in the 3rd in the third inning also scoring a run; 2 more singles and a run in the fourth and a single in the 5th inning.

Tight pitching by Upwey’s pitcher Justin Aron restricted us to just a single in the 3rd inning. However in the fourth inning he allowed a home run by Brent Buffa (the Melbourne pitcher) and run credited to him by a free pass by the next batter. Justin was quickly replaced by his brother Nathan who took control. Unfortunately in the 5th inning he allowed a hit, 2 free passes and an error for Melbourne to put on 2 extra runs tying the score 5 all.

Melbourne scored the winning run in the 6th inning and a double to centre by Sam Boone. Things got a bit shaky in the 7th when Melbourne put two runners on base by errors but a line drive to Sam Boone got them out of the inning. Melbourne scored another double in the bottom of the 7th but it had no bearing on the result with game being called as it was a timed game.

Junior Match reports

U18 Melbourne/Malvern Combined defeated by Fitzroy 2 - 12

U16 Melbourne State League drew with Springvale 3 - 3
Melbourne 0 0 0 0 0 3 - Runs(3), Hits(7), Errors(2)
Springvale 0 0 0 1 0 2 - Runs(3), Hits(1), Errors(2)

Good result from a game well played by the boys who were previously defeated by this team earlier on in the season (10-2).

The boys were magnificent in the field - determined to keep Springvale at bay. Highlights were Matt's fly caught after sprinting, leaping and then rolling to the ground; Sean's vertical jump to stop a hard hit line drive; Rhys' rapid response as catcher to short-stop in tagging out the runner stealing second; Oliver, Cooper, Sean and Xander's super quick moves in throwing the runners out at first - manned by Harvey then Cooper - depriving Charlie then Jacob from any of the action in left field.

At bat, we had a few good hits by the boys; a well timed "Sac Fly" by Harvey to bring in our first run for the game; Ben casually taking "one for the team" by a "Hit by Pitched Ball"; and a close and risky steal by Matt sliding across home plate.

Singles: Matt, Sean x 2, Harvey, Rhys, Jacob
Doubles: Xander
RBIs: Harvey

Pitching:
Xander 3.2 inn, 1 H, 4 Ks, 3 BB, 1 ER
Cooper 0.1 inn, 0 H, 1 Ks, 0 BB, 0 ER
Adam 1 inn, 0 H, 1 Ks, 3 BB, 2 ER

U16 Melbourne Metro AA defeated by Sunshine 18 - 2

U14 Melbourne Metro League defeated by Waverley 12 - 5
A great game against a strong opponent with the young demons taking it up to the classy Waverley team early and putting on plenty of pressure. In the end the Waverley hitters were just too strong, but the last two games have shown that the young demon side is improving and is able to mix it up with the best teams in the league.

The pitching was led by Trent, who bamboozled the hitters early, and Mackenzie and Ryan continued their good form with the ball, challenging the batters with some quality pitching.

With the bat Mackenzie dominated, driving the ball hard to pick up two excellent hits. Mo also crushed a ball through the field with a clutch hit and all the players worked hard in the box against some of the best pitching in the league. Another great effort in challenging conditions.

U14 Melbourne Metro defeated by Waverley 17 - 3

U12 Melbourne Demons State League defeated by Sunshine 13 - 8

U12 Friday Angels drew with Red Sox 4 - 4

U12 Friday Dodgers defeated Malvern 11 - 2
Ladies and Gentlemen, it is my privilege, that I present nominations for The Academy Awards 2014 – Best Picture – and the nominations are ….Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Wolf of Wall Street”; Matthew McConaughey for “Dallas Buyers Club” ; Christian Bale for American Hustle and…. Chris Helder for “Dodgers Under 12” . …. And the winner is ……..Chris Helder !!! for Dodgers Under 12. !!!

It was a resounding action film made at Kooyong where the Dodgers won 11-2. There were some excellent supporting actors…I saw Jasper belt 6 consecutive pre-match pitches from the coach and he starred in the match with the bat. Jerry also displayed excellence with the bat and on the field. Henry did an all round massively supportive role. Brilliant as catcher and some fine bat work as well. Tate scored a couple of runs and took a screamer catch in the outer field. Billy nearly cracked the skin off the ball …big things to come here. PJ …crikey this is a star in the making. PJ was just so close! Koby got some terrific hits and runs to match- watch out for his pitching – he holds massive promise! Ben swings that bat faster than lightning and he will be a force to be reckoned with in the very near term. Nice running too. Blake pitched very accurately to continue hearing that umpire yell out “strike 3”. He got a couple of runs as well, including a ballerina leap to strike the ball! Our newcomer also showed a real skill set. Well done! Keep in mind that we had 3 sickies away and we look forward to their recovery and speedy return!! All up, a fine effort. The film also had some humour insofar as during coach’s pitch, he was hit twice and managed to dodge a striking hit by a whisker.

A brilliant film highlighted by action, supportive play, choreography, humour and how pleasant to have a string of models sitting in deckchairs nearby…I assume that was to give the overall film additional marketing appeal. . Well done Dodgers.
