Batchat Round 18

If you have any match reports, junior, senior, men, women, masters, social, anything, send it in to by 9pm Tuesdays to get into the week's issue.

Welcome to round 18 of the Newsletter. This weekend sees the last of the regular season for most teams.

The firsts and thirds are through to finals, the firsts have sealed top spot in the Eastern conference and the thirds with a win on Sunday will also finish first. The fourths and Masters A sides will need to win and hope other results go their way to play finals. The Division 4 East side will need to win Sunday to clinch a finals spot. The Masters B team will be playing finals and will be defending their 3 consecutive titles.

In juniors, the U14 Metro side under Brent Buffa will be playing finals along with all three U12 Friday night teams so good luck to all players.

Junior presentation night is going to be on the Sunday 16th of March from 4pm, with Seniors Presentation on the night before at the MCG on Saturday 15th of March.

On the field the firsts were beaten by Sandringham 10-2 after a rough outing on Sunday, but rebounded in the mid week game with a strong 3-1 victory. They have had one of their best seasons since 1971 and are in a good position to challenge for the Division 1 title.

Match Reports

Sandringham v Melbourne

After a rough outing on Sunday being beaten by Sandringham 10-2, the firsts rebounded in the mid week game with a strong 3-1 victory which as sealed top spot in the Eastern conference. We will play either Geelong or Essendon in the semi final best of 3 series starting Tuesday 25th of February.

Masters A v Blackburn won 8-1

Perfect conditions for a traditional rivalry game against the Blacky Boys. Damo once again turned up late in his regulation issue Mulgrave flanno warm up top so was relegated to 12th in the batting line up (well that's what we told him but his form justified the spot too;-)

First innings and Lardio was promoted to the three spot and succeeded in launching a bomb over LF at Macleay Park to show us he had finally settled into 'Masters Pace' - no looking back now big fella. Whitey took the new ball and continued his late season form keeping the 'experienced' Blacky boys off balance over four innings, with five scattered hits and one unearned run. We picked up two in the fourth thanks to a double to Eddy, single to Lardio, a Sac to DaveK and a single to Murray. Skinny relieved Whitey for a hard working clean inning, with Prez Dave managing to settle a few scores drilling three or four guys without giving up a run over two innings. We got another five run in the sixth innings with Jason walking, Eddy reaching on error, Lardio picking up his third hit, Whitey walked, Murray reaching on an error, walk to Andy and a hit to SteveG.

Highlight of the evening was Murray's much, much better half Jane cooking up a storm in the kitchen with a magnificent variety of salads and roast chicken that was well received by both teams. Yes, Murray is fighting well above his considerable weight. Must win game at home v Springvale next week to have any chance on making finals if other games go our way.

Junior Match reports

U18 Melbourne/Malvern Combined abandoned with Werribee

After a long trek out to the exposed Werribee field - as soon as the Sun got up above the horizon it warmed up very quickly - we managed to get a start and jumped out with three runs in the first but when the wind picked up so did the temperature and we the game was abandoned and with it our chances of playing finals. Our last game is next week at Malvern.

U16 Melbourne State League abandoned with Sandringham
Melbourne 0 1 3 - Runs(4), Hits(6), Errors(0)
Sandringham 1 0 - Runs(1), Hits(2), Errors(0)

The heat policy kicked in just after the top of the 3rd inning with our boys 3 runs in front. With no relief from the blazing sun in sight, the game was officially called at 10:16am.

Highlights in the field were: Ollie (3rd base) smart on his feet in a fielder's choice by throwing to Sean (catcher) & tagging out the runner crossing home plate; Ben (1st base) fielding the ball to Cooper (pitcher), quick to cover first & make the out; and Adam catching a slow & high fly despite the sun in his eyes.

Highlight at bat was Xander's triple receiving cheers from the spectators & bringing home 2 runs.

Though the game ended early, all was not lost as the team (as well as our coaches Alex & Campbell) headed down to the Sandringham Bay Beach for a quick dip.

Singles: Cooper, Matt, Harvey x 2, Adam
Triple: Xander
RBIs: Xander x 2, Harvey, Adam
Cooper 2 inn, 2 H, 1 Ks, 1 BB, 1 ER

U16 Melbourne Metro abandoned with Berwick

U14 Melbourne State League abandoned with Malvern

U14 Melbourne Metro defeated by Upwey 8 - 3

U12 Melbourne Demons State League defeated by Preston 3 - 8

U12 Friday Angels defeated Malvern Red 4 - 3
The U12 Angels won a close game against 2nd placed Malvern Red 4-3. Leading 4-3 with 6 minutes to go with Malvern runners on 2nd and 3rd, we closed out the innings without conceding thanks to Thomas W's pitching and strong fielding.

The five minute rule applied so we had another innings to defend the lead against Malvern's top order after we failed to score. Strong pitching from Adriaan resulted in 3 infield ground balls which Connor (3rd base) made no mistake for the first and second outs and then Thomas R (short stop) making a high pressure play from a hard hit ground ball to finish off the game.

U12 Friday Dodgers defeated Blackburn 12 - 1
As was known, Coach Helder flew in late from a National motivational speaker circuit (titled – “ Victory is Good Eye- lessons learned from Under 12 Dodgers”). Apparently ovations were common place. I was informed that the team was most grateful to hear him shouting from the plane above, with binoculars in hand…and beef jerky in mouth. Needless to say that A.C. Darren Hartin, put in place a highly tactical team- fresh blood- that proved an utter success against our opposition- Blackburn. Final score was 12-1;

Congratulations Darren- a fine job. (There was no supportive evidence that Darren was wearing a hidden earpiece tuned into Chris in the plane above). It was a tremendous opportunity to show our team depth….and to briefly run through the team,… Jerry, some terrific power hitting and runs- it all came together; Jasper, also belted the ball numerous times to gain welcome runs (supported by his chanting Dad!); Billy – displayed real confidence in a great batting effort; PJ made some great contact and was a “Speedy Gonzales” between those bases; Blake did some brilliant fielding and gained some valuable runs; Tom, some excellent first time pitching, handy with the bat and was clearly performance bolstered by a vocal Dad !; Koby put great runs on the board coupled with some brilliant passages of fielding; Henry- superb catching from some challenging , at times, pitching, wise fielding and runs as well; Ben got on top of that bat so well and ran like fury between the bases- great effort. Hudson was a superb powerhouse in pitching and similarly walloped the ball with the bat for runs; Tate fielded with confidence also gaining a couple of runs; Max, unfortunately was a late scratching due to the dreaded lurgy but the team looks forward to his return next week.
