Batchat Round 20 - Finals

If you have any match reports, junior, senior, men, women, masters, social, anything, send it in to demonsbc@yahoo.com by 9pm Tuesdays to get into the week's issue.

Dear FIRSTNAME,

Welcome to round 20 of the Newsletter and finals. All senior teams won their first finals on the weekend, that must have been due at least in some part to a mid week talk by club legend Ken Stephens about playing in the moment. In each of the team finals the key moments were won by Melbourne and now the thirds, fifths and Masters B team have their chance to challenge for a flag this weekend.

The First nine started their post season campaign well with a pitcher dominated game in the first of a best of three semi final series with Blackburn and won 1-0. Andy Mann was at his usual best after 7 and a third innings of scoreless work, Campbell Wiggins relieved and Matty Blackmore put on a show with a diving catch and gunning a runner down at the plate to keep the Burners off the scoreboard in the 6th then closing for the last 2 outs in the ninth. The second game in the series will be played at Surrey Park Saturday 2:00PM and the third if required at Blackburn. The winner will progress to a best of three grand final series against either Geelong or Essendon.

The Third nine, Fifth nine and Masters B team won through to their respective Grand Finals as did two of our Friday night under 12 teams, the Angels and the Red Sox. The Under 12 Friday Grand Final will be an all Melbourne affair and will mean three premierships in a row for this age group after the Dodgers had won the last two.The Masters B team will be going for their fourth premiership in succession, it will be a remarkable feat if they can pull that off.

If you would like to support one of the teams in finals here are the dates & times:

Match Reports

1st Nine Semi Final 1 v Blackburn won 1-0

The line up for this game promised a lot in all areas but it was the red hot pitching duel that left it locked up at nil all through the first four innings. Blackburn were repeatedly foiled by Melbourne’s sharp fielding none more so than when catcher, Matt Kent fielded a well placed bunt from Andy Whiteford and threw a bullet to make Leigh Betrand the first out at 2nd base in 5th. Blackburn looked to be seeing the ball well as they continued to hit hard in that inning. Their luck was out though when Tierney hit a powerful line drive into an unassisted double play at 2nd to send the Orioles back to the dugout.

A great diving catch in right by Matty Blackmore started the 6th as Melbourne’s fielding came to the fore again. Blackburn’s Steve Bookluck's, two on, two out, line drive looked like a game changer later in that inning, but Ryan Booth was thrown out at the plate, trying to score off that shot, by (the man who was lapping up the opportunity to show his elite skills) Matty Blackmore.

Buffa of the Demons snuck one between first base and the fielder that went to the corner for a double in the 6th then advanced on a pass ball. Tom Shields the Melbourne DH then came to bat with two out after two “base on balls” loaded them up. Shields bounced a slow roller to the shortstop, forcing a run across the plate with an error and giving Melbourne the only score of the game.

Andy Mann left the mound after 1 out in the 7th and was replaced by Campbell Wiggins, having given up 0 runs after 5 hits, 5 strike outs, two walks and one HPB on a 98 pitch count, a great performance by the Demons starter.

Hussey exited the hill later in the game after 7 complete innings, 5 strike outs, 5 hits and 1 unearned run on a 90 pitch count. A superb performance in a pressure game. Adam Bright showed great control and pitched a shut-out in the 8th.

The Orioles went into the 9th with their last chance to even it up trailing 1-0. Rogers grounded out and was ejected after an argument about whether the ball came off his foot. Bookluck extended his night with the bat as he walked, then Wiggins gave Betrand a free pass as well. Wiggins exited the mound for Blackmore who put a further stamp on the game when he got the last two outs leaving Blackburn scoreless. Melbourne head into the two remaining games of the series, on the weekend, one up.

After a pressure game of baseball both starting pitchers went deep and kept skilled hitters off balance. The work in the field by both teams was exceptional barring one pressure play. Only one unearned run separated the teams in the end but credit to Melbourne for applying the pressure to make it happen. That said the matches between these two on Saturday and Sunday if required, promise to deliver high pressure and entertaining baseball. Blackburn will be looking to make up for a hard fought and disappointing loss. It could go either way.
