Batchat Newsletter Round 4

If you have any match reports, junior, senior, men, women, masters, social, anything, send it in to demonsbc@yahoo.com by 9pm Tuesdays to get into the week's issue.

Dear FIRSTNAME,

A big weekend of games, and for the first time midweekers for the thirds and fourths. Good results all around with the Firsts returning to the winners list with a tight 6-5 win over Upwey, the seconds pulling off another win and some good results in thirds, fourths and Masters. In the midweek games, the Thirds and Fourths came away with comfortable wins over Newport.

Junior results show promise with the U16 State team remaining undefeated after 3 rounds, the Firday night teams cruising along and for the first time a Little League Minor competition starting up.

This weekend the Firsts and Seconds are at Surrey Park, with home games for the Thirds and Fourths as well at Myrtle Park, so get down and watch a game or two.

For those wishing to make uniform purchases for the remainder of the year they must be made through the online shop.

Match Reports

Second Nine won 6-1 vs Upwey FTG

The Demons were at home again wanting to get the season to a 2-2 record against the Upwey Tigers. Daniel Beattie on the hill to have a solid start with a pitch count of 80 for the afternoon. Telford catching to Beattie saw them work the 1st inning convincingly. Some good ABs in the bottom of the 1st saw the Demons score the 1st run. Beattie adjusted his tempo and kept on pounding the strike zone, going through five innings with no runs and the Demons contributing with great base running, ABs and solid defensive play with the young players in Gerwing, De Highden and McMahon finding some confidence in all areas of the game. A real boost for the team to make us a solid outfit. Beattie went in to the 6th and ran in to his pitch count with two out and a run scored. Limburg closed out the top of the 6th to lead us to our second win 6-1.
A great game with a lot of positives but still more improvement to be made in all areas.
Well done to Ben Telford leading off, stealing and catching a solid game. Beattie a great start, hits to Telford, Betreen, Squire, Limburg, Gerwing, De Highden.
We look forward to another home game against Waverley next week. A thank you also to all those who assist in the diamond setup every week especially Dave Keyhoe and Malcolm who are outstanding week in and week out.

Masters A 38+ defeated Croydon 9-1

Masters Baseball, where triples become trotted doubles…

Top of the table clash between Melbourne Masters A and Croydon’s A team featuring not one but four Hubbard’s! In Lard we trust, and the big fella didn’t let us down with a six pitch first innings, with a couple of grounders and Sean snaffling a long ball from ‘Popeye’ Steve Balkin. Time to go to work and Jason led off magnificently with an eight pitch walk, then he was pushed around by the Chairman’s long ball to triple alley (a relaxing double). Lardio did the same and trotted his triple into a double as well – it appears only the young fit guys can run triples right Jason! Wazza walked, Murray took his time for a nine pitch dropped third strike rbi that scored Lard ;-), so Skinny decided to tap one to second, jog to first, only to have the ball thrown into our dugout for a two rbi double (Skinny of course called it like that)! 4-0 after one.

Lardio continued to spin his sidearm corkscrews in the second and third to allow Croydon’s potent 11 batter line up only one AB each through three. We blanked in the second then scored another four in the third with ‘hits’ to Lard, Skinny, Murray, Bryce and Steve De Witt. They scored one in the fourth thanks to a Balkin double scoring a Hubbard from first base, but the damage was done when we turned to C-Net’s Bryce Gammon in the fifth. We snuck in a ninth run bottom four off a Keyhoe double, however Bryce closed out the game. Bryce is slowly getting back to form both on the field and post game, an exciting prospect in both cases. 9-1 win and top spot for the A’s – yes, it would have been at least 12-1 if you were there Damo but we managed to win without you!

Masters 45+ defeated by Blackburn 9-0
Hondo started on the mound for us the first time this year and held the strong Blackburn lineup to a couple of scrambled hits over 4. However other than a couple of hits to Steve Pahos and Hondo and with the Blackburn outfielders running everything down we did not put much pressure on their defence all night. We dropped our normally solid defense in the last two innings and struggled to make out in the field, 8 of the 9 runs scored were unearned telling the story.

Women’s Division 2 Melbourne Demons vs. Springvale - Lost 7 – 6 @ Springvale

A great game of baseball unfortunately we came out of the battle on the wrong end as we got pipped at the post by one run in the bottom of the 6th dig. The only down side to this game is that we left too many runners on base in scoring position so need to work on getting that one extra hit with 2 outs to ensure we maximise our scoring chances. All in all a great game to be proud of so keep your heads up Ladies.

Tough battle back and forth as we gave them one in the first and then we scored one. All bats quiet in the 2nd then the Lions scored another in the 3rd to go ahead 2-1; then we scored another in the 4th to tie it up. The fifth dig they scored 3 on 4 walks and an error whilst we came back in the fifth to score 3 for the tie on a couple of hits and an error, we were still threatening when they brought in Hall of Famer Simone Wearne to close out the dig; with her expertise on the mound showing through striking out one and then getting a week ground ball back to the mound for a 1-2-3 double play to end the dig.

Charmaine got the start and went the distance giving up 2 earned runs on 7 hits with 7 walks and 3 strike outs, great effort Maine.

Great determination and stamina on the day where most would have given up. It just goes to show you can beat anyone in the league if you keep your head up and keep going for it. Great work Lady D’s.

Summary:

Hits: Alice, Jess S. & Jess W. – 2, Mel, Charmaine, Glenda & Kylie – 1

RBIs: Leah, Charmaine, Mel, Alice & Jess S. - 1

Little League Major – Friday night Dodgers defeat Upwey FTG 12-5

Coaches Helder and Hartin collaborated early about ‘game plan.’ Swiftly, the team was manipulated into a real force, despite Blake’s shoulder injury, Tom’s absence and the rejigging of the team in light of fairness to all boys. The line- up subsequently looked formidable.
Let’s look at the pitchers… Hudo pitched with flair, in the first innings; 3 out- no runs; second innings was a repeat. It was rare to see an opposition player get a run let alone touch a base under Hudo’s mastery. Blake M. also put in some fine and accurate pitching keeping runs to a minimum, given his speed !. On the batting front, Tate started the team with a nice hit paving the way for others to bring him home. He made several runs. Hudo went for the walk in the first innings followed by yet another smash outside the boundary. Koby also connected with the ball many times running through to 3rd base on one such occasion. Really nice work. Henry’s unconventional wack – referred to as “the fly swatter”, produced another run. Billy made a very sneaky little hit prompting confusion with the opposition. Nice running Billy. PJ showed prowess with some terrific cutting – the ball will go a mile when he makes clean contact. Blake M got to second base on an opposition overthrow. Jasper really got amongst it, displaying great ability and brought home the bacon as well. Fielding wise it was a great team effort. Henry did some brilliant blocking as catcher and took a breather following a collision. This showed amazing determination from our team to minimize the Upwey’s scorecard. Tate did a great job filling in and maintained the high standard set by Henry. The team showed many fine traits in the field including backing up and accurate throwing.
Well done Dodgers…another top effort.
