The Melbourne Baseball Club is thrilled to announce two significant coaching appointments. Stephen Black has been appointed Pitching coach and Daniel Betreen appointed Club Coaching Coordinator.
Stephen Black is a name very familiar in Victorian Baseball having played and coached senior and junior baseball for 4 decades.
Stephen played Division 1 baseball for Coburg and later played ABL for The Melbourne Bushrangers and also the Victorian Provincial team. As a senior coach, Stephen has an extensive resume, highlighted by B.V. Coach of the Year status with the Fitzroy Baseball, Club. More recently Stephen has been an assistant at The Melbourne Aces for the past 3 seasons. He also coached the Victorian Provincial Team and Diamond Valley Teams in both junior and senior.
Stephen stated last week “I still have a great passion for the game of baseball and believe that my appointment at the Melbourne Baseball Club and the experiences gained throughout my career willhelp to develop players at all levels within the club”.
Stephen has coached a number of elite programs for junior baseballers in recent times including Head Coach of the Australian Cal Ripken Program in 2009 and 2010, Victorian Under 23 head coach for 4 years, Victorian Rubber ball Japan Tour Head Coach for 3 years, Victorian U16 and U18 State teams. More recently he has taken teams to the USA as Head Coach of the Victorian Kangaroos program.
Daniel Betreen is one of Victorian baseball coaching’s brightest young stars. Despite his young age, Daniel has an extensive playing and coaching history with the Berwick baseball Club and has recently developed an impressive resume of coaching at Elite levels.
Daniel has shown a real passion for coaching since a young age and has been rewarded with a number of high profile roles. Most recently, Daniel has been involved in the Major League baseball Australian Academy as a pitching coach and senior assistant to Jon Deeble. He has been involved firstly as an assistant and later as a junior head coach and on field co coordinator at the Melbourne Aces Academy. He was the coach of the Victorian U14 Blue team that won a silver medal at last year’s Australian Championships. He was also a development coach with the Melbourne Aces last season.
Amongst a number of other elite programs, Daniel was selected in the Major League Baseball International Exchange Program in 2012 where he attended the Oakland Athletics instructional league in Arizona. His passion for coaching is matched by his desire to see all athletes reach their full potential, a key objective of the Melbourne Baseball Club.
Daniels role at Melbourne will see him working with junior and senior coaches to further their own individual skill sets and in turn, impart best practice coaching across the club. Daniel will be responsible for the introduction and achievement of coaching accreditation across all levels and will host sessions for Club coaches to discuss skills, tactics, training techniques and people management. He will also run a Melbourne baseball pre season Academy program exclusively and free for U14 and U16 players, to be run at K2 indoor centre starting September 1.
Stephen and Daniel will join Senior Coach Mathew Kent and senior assistants Sam Boone and DavidSimpson in guiding the club to the next level. These two men are both outstanding individuals who will add a great deal to the culture of our baseball Club. They will be warmly welcomed and fully supported in their roles as senior coaches.
