After taking the Grand Final series to the deciding game, the first nine were valliant but ultimately could not push that final run over the plate against Essendon, losing 1-0 in a classic Division 1 final series.
Liam Davine was terrific over 6 innings - holding Essendon to a solitary run on 5 hits, Andy Mann relieved and pitched his heart out - throwing 3 innings only giving up a solitary hit.
The story of the game was Melbourne's inability to convert several opportunities, with no outs and runners at second and third in the fourth inning, Melbourne were unable to score, in the fifth we had runners at 1st and second with none out and were also unable to score as well. Essendon stranded a runner at third in the fifth but they did not need the insurance run as Melbourne's last opportunity in the 8th innings was to come up a blank with loaded bases, and a quick 1-2-3 in the 9th handed the premiership to Essendon.
That was the difference between the teams, albeit small in a very closely fought series.
Nathan Aron had a couple of hits, Mitch Ayres, Matt Kent and Oliver McMahon had a hit each.
