1907 – The start of a dynasty

The MCC had a do-or-die final game of the season to prevent East from taking the title, they did so by beating Carlton and secured the premiership by a single point, this started the incredible streak of 7 pennants in a row that is likely never to be beaten.

From the Argus 1907 August 26th:

The baseball premiership was concluded on Saturday, when Melbourne, having beat Carlton by 13 to 4, won the premiership.

There was special interest in the Carlton and MCC game, played on the Melbourne ground, for an MCC defeat would have meant a premiership for East Melbourne. As it was Carlton were defeated by 13 runs to 4 and Melbourne take the honours of the season by a point.  The MCC game was very solid, there was a do-or-die expression about the men that betokened trouble for Carlton.

MCC made 20 base hits to 10 scored by Carlton. There was a particular incident during the game which the umpire (Mr R. Harvie) decided forth with, but subsequently failed to find a rule to justify his action. Ingleton was on third base and Henty was out at first, but the latter went on to second, bluffing the pitcher into throwing to second base. Ingleton, seeing the throw, raced away from third and to the home-plate, but the umpire demanded his return to third base. He was sure he was right, but cannot find it in the rules.

Allan and Scott were a good MCC battery and Ballantyne, Over, Vaughan, Ransford, Scott and Allan batted well. Over was a fine infield, and Vaughan, Ransford and Ramsay took some good flies.
