Melbourne Baseball Club is proud to announce the appointment of Mathew Kent as senior coach for the 2010-11 Season.

Mathew comes to the club with a tremendous track record as a player and coach.

MCC Baseball chairman Malcolm Chiverton said the club was thrilled by the appointment and confident Mathew was the right man to take one of the most promising lists in Victorian baseball to the next level. “Mathew possesses all of the qualities we sought from our club coach - a significant background in playing and coaching, strong personal and team values and a unique understanding of the culture required to build our Club”, Chiverton said.

As a professional, Mathew played in the Seattle Mariners system 1998-2000, Melbourne Reds 1998-9 and in the Boston Red Sox system in 2006.

His national representation includes the 2006 Baseball World Classic, the 2006 Intercontinental Cup, the 2007 World Cup and the 2008 World Qualifiers.

As a Claxton Shield player 2003 and 2005-08, he was a recipient of the Helms Award 2007, Batting Title 2007, and was selected to the All-Star team 2007-08.

He has coached in the US and at the Sunshine Baseball Club 2004-09.

Mathew’s appointment as Senior Coach follows that of Tobias Donahue, who has returned to the US after a highly successful season.

“As the new Melbourne Baseball Club coach I am really looking to see how far this young talented club can go in the coming years,” Mathew Kent said.

He said the full coaching panel for the 2010-11 season would be finalised over coming weeks.

Undefeated all season and grandfinal victors – what a feat! Not just premiers, Champions!

Women's A Team are Champions!

Women's A Team - vs Footscray - WON 13-3 - Champions!!!

Undefeated all season and grandfinal victors – what a feat!  Not just premiers, Champions!

Yes, congratulations are in order for the Melbourne Women’s Baseball Team on an outstanding season culminating in a 13:3 grandfinal win.

The tone was set early by an excellent lead off from Charmaine with the first of 12 team hits for the day. The remaining 11 went to Megan 3, Bec Clayton 2, Merryn 2, Shani 1, Amanda 1, Lee 1, Hayley 1. Amanda should have had two hits after a crushing line drive that was successfully caught by the surprised Footscray pitcher.

A more important stat, RBIs were scored by Megan 3, Bec Fielden 3, Shani 2, Merryn 2 and singles to Charmaine, Bec Clayton and Hayley.

Fielding play of the day was a solid hit to Megan at shortstop, the ball deflecting off her shin to Bec Fielden at second base who still had time to make the out at first base. But as has been previously mentioned in the Batchat match reports during the season, it was truly our fielding that set us apart from every other Division 3 team.

After Shani had thrown 103 pitches, including six strike outs, with only four fielding errors for the match and in the bottom of the sixth inning, the mercy rule was invoked proving that the Melbourne’s women team were without doubt the outstanding team for the 2009/10 season.

The team on the day consisted of Shani De Silva, Charmaine Neate, Rebecca Clayton, Megan Payne, Rebecca Fielden, Merryn Bevis, Alex Ware, Lee Deany, Amanda Edwards, Hayley Schultze, Katrina Lambrou, Janelle Campbell and Lorette Hivert. There were other players who had played throughout the season who all contributed to the team’s success but were not qualified to play finals.

Congratulations especially to the women’s long standing coach Mark Deany who’s been supported by Steve Henderson and Graeme Deany, and scorers Karen MacKinnon and Jane Ware.

Thanks also to the club and spectators for their support on the day.
