Mens 1sts – beat Malvern 8-5
After six Division 1 matches, Melbourne’s 2-4 win-loss record does not tell the full story, off-field distractions and injuries to key pitchers Daryn Cassidy and Ben Smith have had a negative impact on the team’s start to the season. Brendan Ratcliffe has been left to carry a large portion of the load and he did, single-handedly, in the Demon’s first win over Geelong last week in a 143 pitch outing. Against Malvern the team showed its best form thus far this season as the guys exacted some form of revenge on the side that denied them a pennant last season. Tim Frost started on the mound for MCC and pitched six innings for the win, giving up five hits, six walks, four strikeouts and four runs.
Ratcliffe relieved and was credited with the save after giving up six hits, striking out two and conceding a run. The final score was 8-5, which keeps the Demons within striking distance of the top four.

The Demons travelled to Blackburn with daylight saving changes taking it's toll on a few players and others taking time out for a bit of a break over the long weekend. The Demons made a great start with Jack Scheffer pitching well to hold Blackburn to 2 hits for the first 3.5 digs conceding 2 runs. Brandon came back to the team following his serious burns injury to close the match out pitching the last 1.5 digs conceding no further runs and holding Blackburn to no further hits. Our batting line up was less experienced than the first few matches however the team managed 7 hits for the game with 2 to Brandon Hough (one a massive triple) and Mitchell Kelly 2, while 1 hit each were well earned by James Rosewarne, Ted Middleditch, Tim Ross and Adam Hayman. The fielding was not tested in this game thanks to the excellent pitching although there were some very good plays to 1st where Mitchell Kelly provides strong and reliable skills to take the out. The result of this match also sees Melbourne taking top spot on the ladder thanks to the Bye with Waverley Panthers. Next week 6th November we take on Upwey and will be without James who will be involved in State tryouts for Cricket and Mitchell who will be representing Victoria in the State Discus championships. Good Luck boys.
