Mens 1sts lost to Fitzroy 6-2
Mens 2nds beat Fitzroy 8-5
The seconds travelled to a hot and gusty Fitzroy on the weekend and came away with its second and best win of the year. Melbourne opened the scoring in the 2nd inning despite having chances in the first and was able to hold the lead until Fiztroy managed to string together a few hits to lead 4-2 in the 4th. Not to be outdone, the Demons hit back again with the highlight a Sean Mead ground rule double bouncing over the left-centre fence to score two. With the scores tied at 5 heading into the last it was do or die. After a walk and two perfect bunts by Brendan Mann and Peter Moore, Matt Houlden drove in the go ahead runs with a triple. Rhett then stepped up to lay down another perfect bunt for the squeeze run.. Ben Telford was outstanding all day on the mound going the distance with 134 pitches, holding off Fitzroy in the last for a very good win.
Mens 3rds beat Fitzroy 4-3
The 3rds got off to a good start with Adam Promnitz holding Fitzroys hitters to zero in the first whilst the Melbourne offence were in a more productive mood scoring the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first. Defensively we were very solid only making 2 errors and Adam was working on a shutout into the fifth, whilst registering 5 strikeouts. Ben Hart relieved in the last innings and gave up 2 unearned runs which gave Fitzroy the lead by 1 run going into the last innings. Despite the setback Melbourne came right back in the bottom of the last, getting runners in scoring position that allowed a double by Craig Mitchell to win the game 4-3. It was a good tight game which came down to the wire with Melbourne being deserving victors, persisting till the end to take the points. Hits went to James Roy 3, Craig Mitchell 2 (1 game winning double), Julian Davis, and Ben Hart 1.
Mens 4ths lost to Fitzroy 15-10
Ladies lost by forfeit
Under 18 Melbourne beat Cheltenham 9-1 |
Under 18 Melb/Donc drew Malvern 11-11
Under 16 beat Bonbeach 10-7
After a heartbreaking loss at the hands of Upwey last week the under sixteens were keen to make amends against a third placed Bonbeach side. And they came out firing, batting through the order in the top of the first to give themselves a four run lead before they even took the field. Andy Mann was back on the hill for the sixteens and he made the most of it, firing six and a third nasty innings and amassing a ridiculous thirteen strikeouts over the journey. Bonbeach lefty Mitch Sheldon-Collins kept the Demons quiet for the middle part of the game but when he was relieved in the sixth the floodgates opened and six runs scored.
Under 14 Demons beat Waverley 10-9
Under 14 Red Sox beat Waverley 17-16
A sensational 1 run win over the always hard to beat Waverley. Melbourne had two 7 run innings during the game which never felt anything but tight. In the last inning with Waverley storming home, Melbourne held on despite almost falling overt. Nevertheless, any win against Waverley is a good win.
Under 12 beat Upwey 18-7
Melbourne played Upwey at home and this promised to be a good game for the younger players with 3 senior players out of the team and Brandon still carrying his injury. The young Demons started off with a blast with Jack Scheffer pitching to Patrick Politis. Ted Middleditch started at 1st Base and new player Stephen Joyce at Short Stop. Danyon Smart was at 3rd Base and Sebastian Dunbar was at 2nd Base. The outfield was well supported by Tim Ross, Declan Gates and Adam Hayman. Upwey batted in one run in their 1st dig but the Demons soon started their march of authority on the game. Our fielding was strong with some great outs, a highlight being the great catch from Sebastian. Ted Middleditch came in to relieve Jack pitching with a good job in his first assignment. Brandon came to the mound in the last dig to close the game out. Our batting was again great with 7 hits for the match. The Upwey pitching was not so strong with 17 Base Balls and Hit Pitch Balls. Safe hits went to Brandon Hough 2 hits including a big double bagger to left, Jack with a big double bagger to right, Patrick Politis, Adam Hayman, Koshin with his first memorable hit to centre field and Danyon with a great hit to centre. Next week the Demons meet Malvern at Malvern and will be looking for more hits.
