1sts vs Blackburn - WON 9-2
The 1sts have started well in 2006/2007 defeating Blackburn 9 - 2 on Sunday at Surrey Park in the home opener. MCC were far too good on the day easily beating the pre season premiership favourites and driving Blackburn pitcher and prize recruit Cameron Hardy out of the game.
Outstanding pitching performances from Brendan Ratcliffe ( 6 Inn ) & Daryn Cassidy ( 3 Inn ) gave the Demons  a good start to their summer campaign as only a few of hits were allowed all day (1 hr).
Brendan (2 singles 1 rbi) and Daryn (2 singles 1 rbi) were also outstanding in the firld at First taking some difficult throws to keep Blackburn in check all day.
Hits were plenty up and down the MCC line up. Stuart Cox had 3 singles and 3 rbis. Matt Houlden drove in another 2 runs. Michael Dunn 1 single and 2 rbis.
Outstanding defensive play by Mark Doubleday at third ( 7 assists ) fielding hard hit balls and making the long throw to first.
Other hits - Brett Caulfield 1 s, Jordan Mitchelhill 1 s,  Mark Doubleday 1 s, Ian Semple 1 s.   Coach Brett Caulfield did a superb job in managing his team on the day. A quick look at the ladder sees Melbourne on top. How long will it last? Come and find out next week as Melbourne take on Newport at lovely Newport. In any case, it is always good to get off to a winning start.

2nds vs Blackburn - Drew 2-2
What a fantastic way to start the year!
Blackburn has been the team who has had the edge over the Melbourne 2nds over the last 5 years, although this was quickly challenged on Sunday with what can only be described as a team effort. There were strong individual performances, but it was the team as a whole, who binded together to get the aforementioned result.
A game dominated by pitching saw Andy Mann use all 110 pitches in his allowable count to keep a strong hitting Blackburn team to 2 runs. Strike out after strike out had the Blackburn team grouping together at numerous times during the game to discuss different tactics they could use to get runners on base. These discussions were to no avail. Rob Hondo relieved Andy on the mound to solidify our position in the game and stop the Blackburn team from going in front in the last inning. Rob’s efforts gave Melbourne the opportunity to at worst tie the game. Unfortunately, it was only a stretch catch from Blackburn’s second baseman, which saw a Travis Fegan line drive turned into a double play. If safe, it would have surely scored Andy Mann, which would have put the end result at 3-2 Melbourne’s way.
Andy Mann 9Ks, 4 hits, 2 runs, 6 inn.
Singles to Robby Hondo, Travis Fegan & Nathan Jones who had an RBI.
Special mention must be given to Rhett Mitchellhill, who put his body on the line late in the game. We wish Rhett a speedy recovery.
3rds vs Blackburn - Lost 10-2

Pre-season training has never been a strong point for the Melbourne thirds so to draw the customary polished Blackburn side first up was always going to be a tough ask.  Shaun Mead put up an impressive opening day effort on the mound for the Melbourne side who, despite an average age of about 20, were for the first time in recent memory made up of more seniors than juniors.  Despite Shaun's efforts the real story of the day was Blackburn ’s starting pitcher who didn’t concede a base runner until the fifth inning and a hit until the sixth, striking out eleven along the way.  Nick Dundon broke the no-no in the sixth and the shutout was removed by a scorching triple by Adam Promnitz in the seventh.  It was to the teams credit that there were able to hang in for a few late runs when they had been so dominated for most of the game however the offence will need to show up if the Melbourne thirds are going to produce the results they are capable of.
4ths vs Blackburn - Lost 23-6
