1sts vs Waverley - Lost 10-5
How long was the view at the top? 1 week as the 1sts were defeated 10 - 5 by Waverley yesterday at Surrey Park. After the previous two winning games a surprisingly out of form MCC side battled all day. The irony was that as late the bottom of the eighth innings the 1sts still could have stolen the game.
The winning pitcher was Waverley starter Donovan Hendricks who troubled the Melbourne bats for most of the day. MCC again missed coach Brett Caulfield and key player Mark Doubleday was interstate. One bright spot on the day was the towering home run hit by MCCs Daryn Cassidy (we are going to hear about that one all year), he also a single and two runs batted in. Outfielder Matt Houlden had three hits ( 1 double & 2 singles ).  Ian Semple in left field took four excellent catches and also batted a run in.
The telling statistic is that twelve runners were left out on the bases throughout the game. Something that will have to be rectified before next week's important game against Geelong at Geelong.
A game behind the leaders now but still with a game in hand as others have played a midweek game.

3rds vs Waverley - Lost 7-9
When you play thirds baseball you learn pretty quickly that playing Waverley at Waverley is like challenging an American in a hamburger-eating contest – not only do you often end up losing but you have a stomach ache to boot.  Unfortunately on this most recent occasion, some untimely fielding issues in the first enabled Waverley to jump out to a five run lead and from the very beginning Melbourne were playing catch up.  To the teams credit that's exactly what they did behind the strong hitting performances of Rob Ogilvie, Tom Andronas, Shaun Mead and Jayson Shaw who all contributed multiple hits.  Ten hitters came to the plate in the third for Melbourne and turned the game to a six to five Demon advantage.  Waverley struck back with a two run bomb to take a lead that would not be assailed.  Rob Ogilvie, in his third game as a Demon, broke out at short and made some of the nice plays that made him one of the hottest free agents in the market coming into the season.  Overall it was a credible performance by the thirds who are beginning to show that if they can continue to get quality starts out of Shaun Mead they will go along way to challenging the premier teams in the league.

Under 14 vs Springvale/Haileybury - Lost 5-17
The Melbourne team was jinxed on this game. First we had Sebastian unavailable through injury then Matt Abbott not available, then Brandon Hough started to turn grey during warm up which took out the lead-off pitcher. Well the team was taken back. We had Christopher Burrows (U12) help out to make up the 9 to start, only to have Brandon go from crook to very crook and pulled out of the game in the second dig but not before mustering up enough strength to bat in the first Melbourne runs.
The pitching responsibility was managed by Patrick Politis, Adam Hayman and Chris Vapp all were able to pitch very well to start but each tired dropping in their strike rate. Springvale/Haileybury receiving 13 walks and it was only a matter of "How Far" from here. Patrick started off pitching and held Springvale/Haileybury to 4 runs in the 1st dig.  Adam relieved Patrick in the second dig, pitching well but again fading to the end. Chris Vapp mustered up the strength to hold Springvale/Haileybury to 5 runs in the last 3 digs and also came alive to strike out 2 players in the closing dig to finish the game. Melbourne just was not in this game with the bat. The Springvale/Haileybury pitcher Andrew Mathers, a big strong pitcher, tearing them apart with 10 strikeouts, 2 walks and only 3 safe hits for the day. These hits went to Patrick Politis, Mitchell Kelly and a 2 base hit to Adam Hayman.
The team kept trying all day but the errors in the field and the batting collapse was not enough to pull them up. Thanks go to Christopher Burrows who in the end made up our 8th player so we were grateful for him coming down to help out. Chris managed to cross the plate for one of Melbourne's runs, Thanks Chris.
