Under 18 State vs Geelong - Lost 0-10

Under 16 State vs Fitzroy - WON 14-0

After three disappointing results from the previous weeks, the U/16 Demons hit top gear on the weeeknd, putting it all together and only conceding 1 hit and no errors in 7 innnings of baseball, against a hapless Fitzroy.Tristan Field had a day out on the mound and in the batting box and with the support of his field, kept the Fitzroy hitters at bay all morningThe Demons threatened to score every innings, but inexperience cost us dearly and we left 10 runners on base....having said that, it is also worth noting that we also collected 12 hits.  Campbell Wiggins and Alex Hondo, gobbled up everything that came their way at 3B and SS and Jack Rintould along with Emerson, put in good performances in the outfield. It was also a  welcome return to form with the bat for Harley Scheffer, collecting 3 Safe hits.  Next week we play Geelong at home.

Under 16 State - Melbourne/Waverley vs Cheltenham - Lost 5-12

Under 14 vs Bonbeach - Drew 11-11

This match was a test for the U14 Demons with Bonbeach in the top 4 teams for this competition and most players upper age, it was shaping up to be a great battle. The Demons started out well with Mitchell Kelly and Brandon Hough batting in the first 2 runs.  Bonbeach responded with a great batting display with 6 hits driving in 4 runs giving them an early lead.  The Demons 2nd dig had another 2 runs added on the back of Patrick Politis's 2 run home run to Right Field. Brandon Hough came out pitching to hold the Bonbeach team in the 2nd with a great pitching display to retire the batters with no additional runs. Courtney Kapernick had taken a great catch in this dig and a double play for her efforts and making it a total of 3 catches for the day.

It was the top of the 4th and the Demons needed to make a big effort to grab back the lead. We lost 2 in the tail order with Courtney driving a safe hit to 3rd base and making it home from errors. Patrick was up to bat and hit to Short. Mitchell walked and Chris Vapp hit a 2 base hit to Left driving in the 2nd run. Brandon was up to bat and hit to 2nd which brought in Mitchell for the 3rd run and Chris crossed the plate on a wild throw for the 4th run. Stephen Joyce then hit and was safe on 1st from a wild throw driving in the 5th run. Stephen then crossed the plate for the 6th run on a wild pitch which had the Demons with a handy 10:6 lead.

Bonbeach was determined to close the gap. Sebastian was involved in a strategic play at 2nd base where he was coming in from Centre Field to take the pick off. Bonbeach were able to secure 2 runs  before Brandon retired with a great pitching effort holding Bonbeach to 8 runs and a lead of 2 runs to the Demons. Melbourne was shut down in the 5th Dig with no runs scored. Patrick Politis came out to close the pitching with 3 up and 3 down, no runs scored. It was to come down to the last Dig where Melbourne added another gutsy run with Brandon walking and stealing 2nd and 3rd and injuring his knee in the process. Brandon was taken from the ground and Chris Vapp replaced Brandon on 3rd only to steal home on a wild pitch for Melbourne's 11th run. Bonbeach would not let up. There were 3 chances in the last Dig by Melbourne, 2 pop ups and a pick off to 3rd which were not executed effectively which caused the tied game. In all a great contest between these two teams with lots of praise for the conduct in which it was played. Well played Melbourne!

Matt Abbott, a new player to Baseball, contributed to the team and is gaining confidence with each game.
Melbourne had 9 Hits for the game compared to Bonbeach's 14 hits yet we still tied the game, a praise for Melbourne's ability to steal bases and to get home.

Thanks go to Rod Vapp and Tony Joyce for your support on the day and to Jesse Rintoul who came down to help out the team.

Under 12 vs Blackburn - Lost 9-11

Teeball Wrap

Melbourne Baseball Club T-Ball Week One, Friday, November 3, 2006.

A BEAUTIFUL sunny evening set the scene for an enthusiastic first T-Ball session on Friday night. Coach Brock Donley put 11 keen T-Ballers through their paces, starting with stretching and warm-up exercises. After some fielding tips they played a mini-game, with everyone having a bat and a field.

James Stewart-Lambert, 6, Max Mackay, 6, Wilson Swan, 8, Liam Grant, 9, Thomas McGoldrick, 6, Luke Matheson, 6, Jessica Critchley-Roy, 7, Ethan Smoothy, 5, Shanae Smoothy, 9, Natasha Donley, 9, and Liam Garlick all did well in their first full session.

Everyone had a red hot go and enjoyed having a bat while enthusiastic parents and siblings watched. After a warm-down Brock said the kids had a great first session and were really keen. “You guys had a good practise so give yourselves a hand,” he told them.

Brock reminded the T-Ballers to bring a hat and a drink bottle, as the weather will soon heat up. With the formalities over, families enjoyed a sausage sizzle and a chat at the club canteen. Parents are encouraged to watch the summer season T-Ball sessions, which run from 6-7pm on Fridays.

Families with children aged 6-9 interested in joining should contact Melbourne Baseball Club Junior Club Chairman, Rodney Hough at rhough@rohmhaas.com.
