1sts vs Sandringham - WON 11-1

After coming off a disastrous 4 - 3 loss on Thursday night at Sunshine ( where 3 unearned runs cost the game ) the 1sts were very anxious to halt the slide. 3-1 through 4.5 innings, in the 5th, Melbourne hit out with with hits aplenty to score 4 runs and break open the game. 4 more runs a couple of innings later and the game was called after 7 innings on the mercy rule.

Daryn Cassidy, who leads the Div 1 ERA, was the winning pitcher. Matthew Holmes took the loss for Sandringham. Brendan Ratcliffe drove in 4 runs on 2 singles.
Michael Dunn again was in superb form at the plate with 2 doubles & a single ( 1 rbi ). Daryn Cassidy hit a double and 2 singles. Coach Brett Caulfield and Matt Houlden both drove in 2 runs apiece.

Under 18s player Rhett Mitchelhill started at second in the absence of his brother Jordan and starred doing very well with a single and sacrifice bunt at the plate as well as some excellent put outs  in defence.

Big shout out must also go to the Sandy boys who came back for a drink after the game.

Where ever you play, remember to support the club you go to. Buy a drink or something to eath after each game. It helps a lot.

3rds vs Sandringham - WON 14-5

It was one of the best line-ups presented by Melbourne in the thirds for quite some time, that rolled into Sandringham eager for a win.  Taking on the league cellar dwellers the thirds were keen to make ammends for the meager offensive production that has been dogging the team thus far this year.  And they were not to be denied backing up a 2 run first innings with a nine run second.  The hits flowed for a total of 12 highlighted by Brendan Mann's 4 for 4 effort and Rob Ogilvie's pair of ground rule doubles.  Shaun Mead moved his wins tally to 3 with a commanding performance out classing the Sandringham hitters for most of the day before conceding a few late runs when the deal was done.  Club new comer Jake Breen closed things out with a three up three down last innings in what was his first appearance on the mound in Demon red.  The thirds will have their work cut out for them if they are going to keep on the winners list as they move from winless Sandringham to undefeated Sunshine.

Under 16 State vs Essendon - Lost 0-16

Under 16 State - Melbourne/Waverley - vs Sandringham - WON 5-4

Under 14 vs Morabbin - WON 23-10

The Melbourne team was ready for this challenge and keen to build their percentage with some great hits and gutsy base running. Patrick Politis opened the pitching to Stephen Joyce and held Moorabbin to 3 runs in the 1st. Melbourne hit in 4 runs after some careless base running costing a double play and some good hits from Brandon Hough and Adam Hayman. The 2nd dig was 3 up 3 down with Patrick doing it well on the mound. Melbourne scored 7 runs from 3 safe hits from Brandon, Mitchell Armstrong and including Chris Vapp's smashing 3 run home run. Melbourne was up 11:3.  Moorabbin was frazzled. Patrick cleaned up with 2 more K's taking his total to 5 for the day and only one more run scored with the final play a magnificent throw from Stephen Joyce to Brandon Hough on 3rd to tag the runner out. Melbourne slammed on another 5 runs from a big 2 base hit from Brandon followed by singles to Mitchell Armstrong, Chris Vapp, Adam Hayman and Courtney Kapernick. Patrick was put out at home for not sliding which is a costly lesson to learn for future games.

Adam Hayman came in to close out the pitching in the 4th and 5th digs and had difficulty in settling down walking 8 of the 12 batters for 6 more runs in. Melbourne added 7 more runs in the 4th dig with no safe hits recorded taking runs from walks and wild throws to seal the game 23 : 10. In Melbourne's last dig in the field there were 2 more successful tag outs on 3rd by Brandon Hough from Stephen Joyce's great throws from home, a great job boys. Errors in the field by Melbourne still costing too many unearnt runs. There were 4 errors in fielding which cost runners getting on base. We had at least 3 wild throws to 1st which also cost the outs. We will continue to work on these aspects of the game as we progress to finals.

Melbourne has a chance to reach 3rd or 4th position on the ladder if we can hold our own against the lower sides over the next 6 weeks. The training match next week against Malvern U16 Metro at Malvern will be a good test to improve as a team.

Safe Hits:  Brandon Hough 2 doubles and 1 single, Chris Vapp 1 three run Home run and 1 single, and 1 hit to Patrick Politis, Mitchell Armstrong, Courtney Kapernick, Adam Hayman and Sebastian Dunbar.

Under 12 vs Sandringham - WON 20-4

An excellent team effort on Sunday - we had the most hits of any game this year (15) by just putting the ball in play and putting the pressure on the opposition, Jack Scheffer led the hits with 3 including 2 line drive home runs and 7 RBI's, Hudson Gerwing also put together three hits, Lachlan Morris, Tim Ross and Ted Middleditch with 2 and hits to Cooper Gerwing, Naoya Ikeda and Matt Myers meant that we were always on top.  Ted and Lachlan assisted Jack's usual dominant performance on the mound and good defensive work from all rounded out one of our better games for the year so far.

T-BALL REPORT FOR WEEK FOUR, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2006.

A SMALL but enthusiastic T-Ball group worked on their batting and fielding skills this week. Coach Brock Donley particularly concentrated on big hits and several T-Ballers did well to slam the ball it into the outfield. After some stretching and agility exercises Brock set up the field with Natasha Donley on first base, Shanae Smoothy on second and Ethan Smoothy on third. Oliver Grummish did well covering the home plate as Brock challenged the fielders.

Everyone worked on their stopping and throwing and had a go on first base, including Jessica Critchley-Roy and Liam Grant. Brock stressed the importance of concentrating on where the ball was at all times, and several T-Ballers were caught out by his trick throws. They also learned how crucial it is to use a relay throw from the outfield, and to back up your team mates. By the end of the session, which was held on another sunny spring night, everyone was backing up well.

Oliver’s dad Paul and Jessica’s parents Brian and Cheryl also took to the field so everyone could have a decent bat. Brock took time to ensure the bat was held properly, which helped Natasha and Liam smash the ball well into the outfield. Shanae, Ethan, Oliver and Jessica also managed some strong hits.

The players finished up with some running and Chase and Throw, where each player in turn chased a live ball before throwing back to Brock.

Anyone with children aged 6-9 who would like to play T-Ball from 6-7pm on Friday nights can contact Rodney Hough at rhough@rohmhaas.com.
