1sts vs Sunshine - WON 2-1
The firsts have efeated Sunshine 2 - 1 at Sunshine on Sunday in a thrilling game. It was a pitchers duel all day with hits hard to come by. MCCs Daryn Cassidy was the winning pitcher going the full 9 innings for 6 hits 8 strikeouts and 1 earned run. Losing pitcher was Sunshine's Greg Wiltshire who went the full 9 for 4 hits 5 strikeouts and 2 earned runs.
Cassidy walked 1 but Wiltshire walked 5. With both pitchers working quickly the game was over after 2 hours.
Cassidy, who is having an outstanding season, was all business and this was exemplified at the bottom of the 8th when there was controversial play at third base to get MCC out of the innings. The Sunshine player was called safe after sliding head first into the bag. Whilst the matter was being hotly argued with both umpires Cassidy was back on the mound waiting, focused and ready to go. He then retired the next batter to end the innings.
Coach Brett Caulfield won the game for MCC with a sizzling double to left field that drove in 2 runs. He also had a single as well as Michael Dunn and Jordan Mitchelhill.
The next game is midweek against Waverley at home. Thursday, 6pm to 8pm.
Women Division 1 vs Ormond Glenhuntly - Lost 7-24
2nds vs Sunshine - WON 14-5
3rds vs Sunshine - Lost 2-12
Coming off a strong win against cellar dweller Sandringham the Melbourne thirds came in pumped up against an undefeated Sunshine.  Shaun Mead started strong retiring the sunshine hitters in order in the top of the first.  A lead-off hit to Robert Ogilvie set the tone in the bottom half and Melbourne looked like getting the early lead with one out and bases loaded.  Unfortunately the veteran sunshine pitcher was able to work out of the jam and keep the scoreboard clean.  Despite two walks and a hit batter Shaun Mead put up a second donut in the top of two.  In what was becoming a trend the Melbourne hitters once again left runners on in the bottom half without getting a run on the board.

The veteran Sunshine bats could be silenced only so long and in the third they scored four runs on three hits and an error.   Melbourne could not respond and were retired in the bottom half.  Sunshine had awoken and a bomb into the car park behind the wire monster in right earned them a pair more.  Two doubles followed and Shaun Mead gave way to Jake Breen who got us three outs to get out of the innings without any further damage.   Melbourne got on the board in the bottom half with Julian Davis reaching on a HPB and scoring on an Andrew Williams double.  Andrew advanced to third and scored on consecutive wild pitches and Melbourne had a second run.  Sunshine's bats were too strong as they extended their tally to twelve over the last two innings.   Melbourne on the other hand could only produce one mighty ground rule double to James Roy but the scorers were not troubled again.
4ths vs Sunshine - Lost 10-12
Under 18 State vs Bonbeach / Moorabbin - WON 6-0
Under 16 State vs BYE
Under 16 State - Melbourne/Waverley - vs Doncaster - Lost 5-8
Under 14 vs BYE (Malvern )
The U14's rocked up to Malvern to play the Under 16 Metro team in a practice match. Malvern sitting equal 4th with 5 wins by big margins (16:1 over Springvale/Haileybury and 21:2 over Preston/Fitzroy) and 2 losses by small margins of just 1 run were looking to "hang the young Demons out to dry". Malvern mostly 15 year olds compared to Melbourne's mostly 12 year olds were pretty cocky and expecting to thrash the Demons. The Demons played remarkably well in this match and were able to hit safely batting in 5 runs against some pretty fast pitching, including some curve balls not yet faced by these young players. Malvern taking the match by only 13:5 had coach Bruce Everett (Malvern Chairman) saying "gee you guys really are good".
There was a great spirit in the game and Malvern players were surprised to learn that our players were 12 and 13 years old and complemented us on our hitting. Some players from the Malvern bench asked "how old are you guys?" which put the game in perspective and added confidence to the young Melbourne team. Parents participated in this event and noted all details of their son's and daughter's plays for a review on Wednesday following the training with the Victorian ACES at Bonbeach.
Next week we play Malvern U14 at Malvern.

T-BALL REPORT FOR WEEK FIVE, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2006.
HOT weather kept T-Ballers to exercises and drills this week. But it also gave them a chance to shine with their throwing and catching skills. Alex Hayman, Shanae and Ethan Smoothy, James Stewart-Lambert, Liam Grant, Natasha Donley and Jessica Critchley-Roy all showed great improvement. Wilson Swan was promoted to the under 12s for the night.
After some warm-ups and a jog, coach Brock Donley took time to explain the right throwing, fielding and catching techniques. He stressed the importance of getting your body behind the ball, and not being afraid of it. “The only person that will get hurt will be you if you’re afraid of the ball,” he said.
The players did lots of ball chasing and ran well considering the heat. They also threw really well when they relaxed and didn’t think too much about what they were doing. Ethan was extra keen to try some big catches and Liam and Jessica took some great grabs. Alex, Shanae, Natasha and James also threw and caught really well. Catching was a big focus, with Brock explaining the need to let the ball fall into the glove rather than snatching at it. “If you hit the ball it’s going to bounce right out,” he said. “I don’t care if you miss it. If you don’t swipe I’ll be happy.”
