1sts vs Bonbeach - WON 6-5
Missing key players Daryn Cassidy & Michael Dunn the Demons were very determined to stop the recent slide. Left hander Tim Frost took the mound and was the winning pitcher going 5 innings for 8 hits, striking out 2 and giving up 3 earned runs. Mathew Prior took the loss for Bonbeach going 5 innings on 10 hits, 1 strikeout and 4 earned runs. Brendan Ratcliffe got the save for MCC over 4 innings on 5 hits, 2 strikeouts and 1 run.
Both teams had 13 hits in very hot conditions. Coach Brett Caulfield led the way at the plate ( 2 hits inc a double and 2 runs batted in ) and in the field. Pitcher Tim Frost also had a couple of hits and drove in 2 runs. Rhett Mitchelhill continues to impress with another 2 hits.
Singles also to Stuart Cox ( 2 ), Ian Semple ( 1 rbi ), Jordan Mitchelhill, Brendan Ratcliffe & Mark Doubleday.
It was also a case of a number of players getting robbed by the field, a number of hits were smashed only to find their way into the outstretched arms of the fielders. In a rare play, Mark Doubleday smashed a ball up the middle past the pitcher only to hit the pitching rubber and fall into the hands of shortstop for the out. Thats baseball. Good to have a win in such in important game.

3rds vs Bonbeach - Lost 6-14

After getting belted last week the question was going to be how the thirds react - Bonbeach came out with a moronic and unoriginal display of trash talking that provided all the motivation the thirds needed.  Jake Breen got hiut around early but hung it there, got out of trouble and ultiumately provided the threes with a chance to win the ball game.  And take out a few poorly timed errors and add a wee bit of luck they would have.  Offensively Melbourne put up a strong performance with James Roy and Shaun Mead the major conributors with 2 hits each.  Jake Breen helped his own cause with a double.  With two out, a runner on second and two minutes left the thirds were a hit away from tying it up.  Shaun Mead delivered with a hit through the left side, the left fielder came up with the ball as Peter Moore rounded third for home and made a good throw to nail Pete at the plate.  It may sound routine but more often than not in the thirds that play will end up in a run.  So intead of a 7 all game with a runner in scorring position we went out to play another innings and Bonbeach made the most of it.

Under 18 State vs Werribee - Lost 9-1
Under 16 State - Melbourne vs Springvale/Haileybury - Lost 7-4
Under 16 State - Melbourne/Waverley - Uwpey / Ftg - WON 6-5
Under 14 vs Upwey / Ftg - WON 16-15 to take 3rd spot on the ladder
This was another must win game for the Demons eyeing off 2nd spot for the double chance in the Finals. Melbourne with Adam Hayman absent for the rest of the season, called on Jesse Rintoul to support the team. This match turned into a "Titanic" encounter with the Demons in a hard "come from behind" battle to wrestle the win away from Upwey FTG in a well fought out 5 dig match finishing at 11:25am. Melbourne started off poorly with many errors in the field allowing Upwey a 5 run jump start. Mitchell Armstrong came off injured after the 1st dig. Brandon Hough started the pitching and finished the 3 digs with 6 Strike outs and only 2 walks with his change-ups working a treat.. This Upwey side made up of mainly upper age U14's  were getting bat to ball and the Demons could not get their fielding together, giving up 3 runs each in the 2nd and 3rd digs. It looked like a tough ask for the Demons to come back at 11:6 after the 3rd dig.
Patrick Politis came in to relieve Brandon and he managed to hold the Upwey team to 2 runs in the 4th with a significant lift in support from the fielders. Courtney Kapernick came alive featuring in what proved to be 3 of the best plays of the day. In the 4th dig Jesse Rintoul fielded a massive hit to CF and fired the ball back to Courtney who had her foot on 2nd base to get the forced out. Great throw Jesse and great take Courtney! Patrick then tried a pick off to 3rd with 2 out and 1st and 3rd covered and Brandon made a great tag to get the out, side away.
Melbourne up to bat with Matt Abbott slamming a hit past SS. Sebastian Dunbar popped one up to SS for the first out. Stephen Joyce cracked a 2 base hit to LF scoring Matt. Mitchell Kelly slammed a single to CF. Brandon hit past 2nd and scored Stephen. Patrick drove to RF scoring Brandon, Chris Vapp doubled to CF and Matt Abbott came back to slam a 2 base hit to CF to score Chris and the 6th run. Melbourne was back in the game! In the last dig, in a do or die struggle, Courtney had taken two massive pop fly's to second base, which seemed to be sucked into her glove, taking the screamers and 2 outs. Only 2 runs to Upwey from the 5th. This left Melbourne the task of scoring 4 runs to win.
Melbourne was back to the top order and needed these experienced players to fire up. Stephen Joyce got a walk and Mitchell Kelly slugged one to RF caught. 1 out and Brandon up to bat hitting a scorching ground ball past the pitcher to CF scoring Stephen. Patrick Politis up to bat and bangs a 2 run home run to level the game at 15 a piece. Chris Vapp was up and looking for a home run to seal the victory but not to be, he was walked. Courtney up to bat and Chris stole 2 and then 3 to be in a scoring position. Courtney was asked to bunt with 2:1 count and 1 out to score the run. The pitch and Courtney pops the ball to the catcher but the ball is dropped. 2:2 on the batter and a wild pitch which gets past the catcher and Chris takes home scoring the win for the Demons. In the batting stakes there were 6 players scoring multiple hits with Brandon Hough going 4 from 4 and Chris Vapp 3 from 4 with a BB to boot, both batting 1.000 for the day. Great hitting from Stephen Joyce, Mitchell Kelly, Patrick Politis and Matt Abbott helped to seal the win. Great Catching from Stephen Joyce all day minimized the number of runs scored from errors.
Next week we play Cheltenham to consolidate 3rd spot. 3 players may be missing for this game as school Camps take their toll. This may force a Forfeit if we cannot field a side.

Under 12 vs Blackburn - Lost 7-9
An important game for us to win to have a strong chance of playing finals, unfortunately we just weren't able to get enough runs on the board and put enough pressure on with the bat.  Jack Scheffer started out on the mound and went 3 and a third innings giving up 3 hits and 4 runs with 6 K's to keep us in the game.  We started out slow with the bat but had a big second innings scoring 5 runs but only gathered only 1 hit on a long double by Tim Ross.  That really was the story of the day as we only managed a combined 3 hits and did not put the ball in play with the bat with 13 K's against us.
Jack Scheffer and Naoya Ikeda collected the other two hits.  Lachlan Morris relived on the mound and Noah Jenney came in to close but with not enough runs to play with we could not hold Blackburn in the final innings scoring 4 to take the game out 9-7.
Centre Comps -
Teeball Wrap for FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2006.
A SMALL but extra keen Teeball group braved a hot night to prepare for next week’s practice game against Malvern. Mark Davidson, Liam Grant, Wilson Swan, Oliver Grummish, George Kabourakis, Natasha Donley and Jessica Critchley-Roy all had a great session. Helped by Mark’s dad Len, coach Brock Donley started with stretching exercises and a quick jog. It didn’t take much to warm up as the sun was still scorching. The teeballers used a light plastic wiffle ball to practise their hitting and catching. No-one showed any signs of a holiday hangover, with some great fielding displays and big hits. Liam also took a sensational catch.
Despite the heat it was a strong session, with push-ups for those who threw their gloves down or lost concentration. Everyone soon learned their lesson J “What’s our most important rule?” Brock asked his charges. “It’s safety before anything else. The second most important is to have fun. The third is to pay attention when you’re in the field.”
The team ran bases to finish, joined by Len and Wilson’s mum Po. Wilson’s sister Belinda, 12, also joined some of session’s activities. Brock then decided some of the positions for next week’s practice game in Malvern. They were Jessica (short stop), Natasha (first base), Wilson (pitcher), Mark (second base), Liam (third base), Oliver (centre) and George (right field). Next week’s Malvern game is at Kooyong Park, Glenferrie Rd, Kooyong (Melway 59 D3), and starts at 5.45pm. All Teeballers are welcome.
Don’t forget to allow time for peak hour traffic!
*Teeball will be held on Friday, February 16, on the eve of the Round Robin to be held on Saturday, February 17. The Round Robin is at Cheltenham Baseball Club, Kingston Heath Reserve, Farm Rd, Cheltenham (Melway 87 F2). Parents should bring water and food to take you through from 8.30am-1pm. BYO sunscreen, floppy had and comfy chair.
Anyone with children aged 6-9 who would like to play Teeball from 6-7pm on Friday nights can contact Rodney Hough at rhough@rohmhaas.com. |
