1sts vs Malvern - Lost 5-13
The 1sts struggled against Malvern on the weekend going down 5-13 on a really gusty hot afternoon. The game was virtually lost in the first innings when young pitcher Andy Mann gave up 6 earned runs. It was a disastrous game for the  talented junior who was removed after 2 innings. He gave up only 1 hit but walked 9 batters ( 7  Base on Balls &  2  Hit Pitched Ball ).
The winning pitcher for Malvern was the very reliable Ross McLean who went 6 innings for 5 hits with 5 strikeouts and 1 earned run. Tim Frost came on in relief for MCC and went 7 innings on 12 hits for 6 earned runs.
Hits for MCC went to Michael Dunn  ( 2s 1d & 1rbi), Mark Doubleday ( d & rbi ), Brendan Ratcliffe ( d & s ), Rhett Mitchelhill ( 2s ), Brett Caulfield ( rbi ), Matt Houlden ( s & rbi ), Stuart Cox ( rbi ) & Ian Semple ( s ).
Newport and Bonbeach played tonight out at Altona in the battle for relegation.
Newport face: Malvern, Geelong, Blackburn
Bonbeach face: Geelong, Malvern, Waverley
The 1sts have three games left against Sandringham, Sunshine and Essendon.

5ths vs vs Melton B - WON 12-10
The 5ths have played their first home game for the season at Macleay Park to fight out a come from behind 12 – 10 win, our 5th straight.  The team is a blend of “Club Legends” and young kids learning how to play the game.  Our first victory of the season was by forfeit – I think Fitzroy were a bit worried by the scintillating form we showed in our first game just before Christmas (37 – 6 loss) which I think after the trip out to Melton or “halfway to Adelaide as some of our more senior members commented – I can only put this poor showing down to jet-lag.  After the extra weeks rest we have since beaten Nth Balwyn, Williamstown, Werribee and now Melton B to jump into 5th spot on the ladder 2 games out of finals contention with 2 games to play.
Sunday’s victory was all the more “sweet” with many of our younger players contributing with the bat and some excellent work in the field. The highlight however was “club legend” Garry Arthur just missing by inches in “sticking” one over the first time up to bat but going all the way next time up for his first “dinger” in probably 20 years.  Yes we did need to administer oxygen even after the home-run trot.
The setting at Macleay park brought back many memories of years gone by with a small loyal group of spectators under a nice shady tree, Les Arthur umpiring out in the middle and of course a couple of fouls nearly going into the house on the corner.  Our next game is against Fitzroy B (away) in which we hope to continue our winning streak before we take on Melton A (at home this time) the team who inflicted our only loss of the season upon us.

Under 18 State vs
Under 16 State - Melbourne vs
Under 16 State - Melbourne/Waverley -
Under 14 vs Cheltenham - Lost 9-14
This game uncovered the Melbourne team weakness where 13 errors in the field cost the game. Melbourne was leading throughout the match until the last innings where some of the errors at critical times cost valuable runs and the play which should have won Melbourne the game.
There were a few brilliant pieces of play in this game created by the aggressive approach to the pitching where Brandon Hough controlled the match with tight pitching and great pick offs to 1 2 and 3 with up to 4 outs on the plays including 2 impressive run-downs between 2 and 3 with Patrick Politis making the tag in each case. The Cheltenham team was held to only 3 safe hits and 4 BB's which shows how tight the pitching was. Stephen Joyce caught all day and was on target with his throw-overs to 2nd and picks to 1st and 3rd keeping the Cheltenham team on their toes.
Our batting also let the team down with only 6 safe hits in the game. Patrick Politis went 3 from 3, all doubles, Brandon's 1 hit and 2 BB's,  Jesse Rintoul's 3 BB's and Chris Vapp's 1 double and 1 BB being the best of the performances. Brandon, Patrick and Chris crossed the plate 2 times while Stephen Joyce was the only other run to score. Patrick picking up 4 RBI's for the game. The rest were hammered by 8 strike outs and some good tight fielding from Cheltenham.
The Under 14's still have their finals hope alive but need this weeks game against Berwick Grey as a "Must Win" game to stay in the four. A loss this week will see the demons miss out on finals. All players are to be at the ground by 8am sharp.
A reminder that Training is set for Thursday 15th at 5pm starting in the Clubrooms. Parents are also invited. Next weeks Training, leading into Finals, is planned for Tuesday 20th (batting/fielding and Pitching/Catching) and Wednesday 21st (Diamond Work)

Under 12 vs Waverley Cougars - Lost 4-6
Another clutch game we had to win, unfortunately we were outplayed on the day even though the boys did not do much wrong for the entire game. Jack Scheffer started out on the mound and held the Cougars, Ted Middleditch came into relieve and has his best day out on the mound for the year keeping the Waverley hitters honest. Matt Meyers played an outstanding game with one of his best days behind the plate, 1 excellent hit and another that was snapped up by the Waverley Shortstop. While hits were fairly sparse, Waverley's pitching was of a fairly high standard and we weren't able to put enough pressure on the scoreboard.
We came close late in the game getting a runner on in our last at bat with Time Ross hitting a high ball to Centerfield - however the Waverley Centerfielder hung onto the catch. Naoya Ikeda got a chance to pitch in the last innings and Cooper Gerwing had his first chance catching behind the plate in the Metro league but by then we had run out of time and went down by a couple of runs.
Centre Comps -
Under 12 Friday Eastern Centre Melbourne 6 defeated Preston 1
Our first win for the year! An excellent team game with contributions from every player - Naoya and Titus helped out on the night and thanks to them we were able to put a full team on the ground. Chris Burrows started out for us, pitching two solid innings keeping the Preston hitters quiet and Naoya Ikeda helping out finishing off the game well for the save, Cooper Gerwing was solid behind the plate and good hitting from Tim Ross, Matt Meyers, Noah Jenney and Lachlan Morris who had a good game at first base, Hudson and Cooper Gerwing and some good defence from Titus Lin meant we kept the pressure on all game and won comfortably in the end.
TEEBALL REPORT FOR FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2007.
A quick note to advise that the Teeball Round Robin has been postponed by 1 week due to the expected Heat on Saturday. Please mark your diaries for the following Saturday 24th February for the same event.
A SPECTACULAR home run was the highlight of a great Teeball game against Malvern in Kooyong on Friday night. Our Teeballers did themselves proud, making at least one run each and a total of 20. The highlight was a home run hit by Malvern player Lewis, playing on the Melbourne side, who along with Natalie and James helped Melbourne make up their numbers. They were joined by Liam Grant, Natasha Donley, Oliver Grummish, Jessica Critchley-Roy, Mark Davidson, George Kabourakis, Wilson Swan and Shanae and Ethan Smoothy.
Lewis’ monster hit helped three of our players home with what’s called a “Grand Slam”. Despite their lack of game experience, our players were all terrific. Everyone understood when to run and kept their positions well in the field. Natasha and Liam did a great job sharing first base, where they caught several Malvern players out. Wilson and Natasha combined well, and so did Oliver and Liam. Liam also ran several players out himself after fielding the ball. Wilson and Oliver shared the pitcher position, Mark and Shanae both played second base, Liam and Natasha shared third base and Shanae and George were catchers. Jess held up short stop and Natalie, Oliver, Ethan , James and Lewis covered the rest of the field. Natasha opened the batting, followed by Jessica, Wilson, Oliver, Shanae, Liam, Mark, George, Natalie, James and Lewis.
All Melbourne’s batters made it home at least once. Only two went out in the first innings, one due to a sensational catch by Malvern’s pitcher. The second innings was even better with only one out. Malvern also played well, with most of their players also making it home. With coach Brock Donley in Sydney for work, Mark’s dad Len was a fantastic fill-in coach, helped by Rodney Hough and Lee Hough. After giving Malvern three cheers and a handshake, everyone went home feeling great about next week’s round robin. *Teeball will be held on Friday, February 16, on the eve of the Round Robin to be held the following morning.
The Round Robin is at Cheltenham Baseball Club, Kingston Heath Reserve, Farm Rd, Cheltenham (Melway 87 F2).
Parents should bring water and food to last from 8.30am-1pm. BYO sunscreen, floppy hat and comfy chair.
Anyone with children aged 6-9 who would like to play Teeball from 6-7pm on Friday nights can contact Rodney Hough at rhough@rohmhaas.com. |
