1sts vs Heat - Replay Saturday 24th at Sandy, 2pm
2nds - While the game itself didn't take place a very intense game of cricket between supercoach Nathan Jones and Rhett Mitchelhil took place. The rules were quite complicated and seemed to change throughout the game, however they took turns bowling at each other and hitting the ball with a baseball bat. Two innings, most runs wins,. If you hit it onto the en tou cas (on the full) you were out and there were some other rules but it was too hard to keep up.
In the end it was the younger Rhett winning 3-2 over the more experienced Jones. Later on the table tennis table, it was 1 game each. The hot day was spent inside watching the cricket and playing table tennis. The day finally finished up at around 4:45 when the temp was still over 40 deg. The clouds which had reached our home ground didn't extend south enough for a game, so we are going back to the wonderful edifice that is the new Sandy clubrooms, to enjoy another chicken strip salad roll for $4.50. Get onto them while you can, bargin!

U18 Melbourne State finished 6 th after the home and away games. There were some games where the pitching was left to the inexperienced pitchers to save the stronger pitchers for the 1 st’s and 2 nd’s. This cost the U18’s a finals berth this year.

Under 14 vs Berwick - WON
In a final roll of the dice to make Finals, the Under 14's met Berwick in a must win encounter. Had Melbourne lost, their final position on the ladder was going to be compromised. True to form the players were able to pull together and secure the win for the last home and away game for a 3rd position finish on the ladder. Well done team you are the only Melbourne Baseball Club Junior Sunday team to make FINALS.
Melbourne played well however there were far too many walks in this game to be competitive into FINALS. Patrick pitched first and managed to hold Berwick  in 1.7 digs giving up 2 hits and 4 runs. Brandon came in to close the 2nd dig with bases loaded and 2 out shut down the dig with no runs scored. Brandon pitched 1.3 digs 2 SO's giving up only 1 hit and no runs scored. The heat policy shortening the game to 75 minutes.
Our batters did a good job getting on base, with a good balanced contribution from all, including Courtney Kapernick, Sebastian Dunbar each getting 2 BB's and Simon Abbott who came in for his first game and hit. Matt Abbott had his first BB for the season which shows he is reading the pitch better. Courtney and Stephen managed to take great catches in the game which really make a difference. Patrick Politis lead the batting with 2 x 2 base hits. Brandon Hough, Mitchell Kelly and Chris all picking up 1 hit. Stephen Joyce caught well the whole game under extreme heat conditions was an integral contributer to the TEAM's win.
Under 12s
Under 12 Sunday Metro East Melbourne 9 defeated by Bonbeach 12
An energy sapping day - Ted Middleditch started out on the mound and pitched well only giving up one hit (unfortunately that was a home run!) in the first innings, with Jack completing three 6-3 plays in a row. We scored a total of 4 runs in the bottom of the first to lead 4-3 after a double by Jack Scheffer, and a monster home run by Ted Middleditch from the West Diamond onto the main field - probably about 300 feet.  Ted struggled a little in the second dig and Jack came into relieve - starting with loaded bases and none out he managed to keep the scoring down to 1 run with a couple of plays at the plate with Matt Meyers and a strikeout against Bonbeach's best hitters.  We did not make much of an impression with the bat in the second dig, only Matt Meyers getting a nice hit to right field. In the third dig Jack gave up a few uncharacteristic walks as it started to get pretty hot out there and we gave up 4 runs.  In the bottom of the third dig we managed to scramble 5 runs on only one hit as the Bonbeach pitchers struggled as well in the heat.
Bonbeach scored 4 runs in the fourth dig, Jack was not quite able to secure the last out by his pitch count giving up a couple of runs, with Lachlan Morris coming in to close the game - Bonbeach managed a total of 4 runs and led 12-9.
Our last dig started well after 11am and with Hudson Gerwing and Lachlan Morris swinging the bat hard, they still went down swinging - Cooper copped one right on the helmet but toughed it out with a smile, Titus Lin took his hacks but went down swinging and that was that for our year.
Pretty good effort under the heat by all - we just weren't able to group our hits together and put pressure on - Bonbeach finished second on the ladder so we have been competitive against all comers this year except for the 1st game of the year against the Waverley Panthers.  Our mental approach to the game has been very good with very few times during the season where we dropped out concentration.  We won 6 of our 13 games and other than the two losses against Waverley Panthers, the other 5 games were only lost by a total of 10 runs.
Under 12 Eastern Centre Melbourne 8 defeated Malvern Mets 6
Our second win for the year! While we eventually won the game due to a count back, we would have struggled had we played on as we were down 9-8 with only one out when time was called.  Chris Burrows pitched the first couple of innings to Cooper Gerwing and did well only giving up a couple of runs. With help from players on the Blue team, Brett Cronin, Josh Matray, Naoya Ikeda and Titus Lin, we were able to field a lot of players for this game - everybody had a go and all the players put bat to ball, including some long hits for Lachlan Morris and Chris Burrows, hits to Josh Matray, Matt Meyers, Hudson and Cooper Gerwing and Carl Davidson.  In the field we were a little sloppy, Matt Meyers pitched in the middle inning and Naoya Ikeda pitched the last innings. Fortunately time ran out for the Mets and the Melbourne Reds have qualified for the finals the week after next.

TEEBALL REPORT FOR FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2007.
THREATENING clouds and the occasional clap of thunder didn’t stop our Teeballers from gearing up for their big tournament. The round robin has been postponed until next Saturday, February 24, due to forecast hot weather. Mark Davidson, Jessica Critchley-Roy, Wilson Swan, Natasha Donley, Liam Grant and Shanae and Ethan Smoothy all braved possible thunderstorms to work on their fielding.
Coach Brock Donley, ably assisted again by Mark’s dad Len, concentrated on fielding skills which will be crucial during the round robin. Everyone had a turn one-one-one with Brock and Len to practice their catching, fielding and throwing. Brock demonstrated the best techniques, and everyone had a red hot go. Liam, Wilson, Natasha and Mark showed particularly strong arms while Jess, Shanae and Ethan all showed great potential given their lack of experience.
Brock also explained the basics of fielding.
“You stop, step and throw,” he said. “Even at home with a ball you can do that. When you come across to throw you’ve got to come across your body.” “Your batting is great. I don’t have to worry about your batting. I (also) heard you guys played really great last week.” *Teeball will be held on Friday, February 23, on the eve of the Round Robin to be held the following morning. Those who don’t have a Melbourne hat or T-Shirt should see Brock or Rodney Hough.
The Round Robin is at Cheltenham Baseball Club, Kingston Heath Reserve, Farm Rd, Cheltenham (Melway 87 F2).
Parents should bring water and food to last from 8.30am-1pm. BYO sunscreen, floppy had and comfy chair.
Anyone with children aged 6-9 who would like to play Teeball from 6-7pm on Friday nights can contact Rodney Hough at rhough@rohmhaas.com. |
