1sts vs Essendon - Lost 2-4
The first were defeated 4 - 2 on Sunday by Essendon in the opening game of the season at Surrey Park. Rhett Mithelhill lead of the bottom of the first and team batting allowed the run to score for the Demons to take the lead 1-0. Essendon hit straight back to tie it up after two innings. Essendon added another in the 4th before the Demons tied it up again in the 6th. Unfortunately a fielding error in the top of the 9th allowed the first run to score and Essendon added another to take a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the 9th. A very tight game from start to finish with the result in doubt up to the last out. The firsts fielded a completely different team from last season due to the retirement of Coach Brett Caulfield and six other veteran players.
New Coach Andrew Fennell, who has advised all players that spots in the Firsts are open for the taking, was bold with his selections for the opening lineup. He went with two junior pitchers in starter Andy Mann and middle relief in Jonathon Wiggins on the mound. Daryn Cassidy will be used as closer this season and came on to promptly shut down Essendon in the final inning.   A wonderful performance by these two young players against the very powerful Essendon team who are expected to challenge for the premiership. Winning pitcher for the game was Essendon's starter Ross Hipke who had 8 strikeouts and no earned runs. Andrew Mann went 6 innings with 9 strikeouts and 1 earned run. John Wiggins went 2 1/3 innings for 2 earned runs. Rhett Mitchelhill continued his good form with the bat from last season collecting 2 hits along with Daryn Cassidy who also had 2. A single to rookie Sean Edwards rounded out the hits column.
Although a good performance first up, when you get the chance to win a close game you have to take the opportunity.
2nds vs Essendon - Lost 2-18
3rds vs Essendon - Lost 3-8
The Melbourne 3mons got there season off and rolling against a young but talented Essendon side.  In true thirds style Shaun Mead got the opening day start having not picked up a ball since last seasons finale at Sunshine.  And in true Shaun Mead style he handled it pretty well for three innings before running completely out of gas.  Melbourne started the season scoring two runs in the top of the first and with a bit of luck could have been right in there with a shot.  Even an unlikely relief appearance by Tom Andronas kept things respectable as he yielded only one run in two innings and really showed something - whether that something happened to be luck is beside the point.  Offensively there were some good signs with Jason Mann going two for two and Hsien getting the extra-base hit account open with a nice double.  Jack Rintoul showed some good signs in his first senior outing for Melbourne.
4ths vs Essendon - WON 9-5

Women Division 2 vs Chelsea - WON 14-3
Women played Chelsea at Chelsea on the weekend and played very well as a team. Pitchers threw strikes , fielders fielded everything that came to them and batters hit good pitches. With playing good team baseball we won 14-3. A sound first up effort but I know we have more to offer, with individuals keen to develop their skills week in week out. |

Telford Facts
BIT
Telford has been away of late but as of this week he is back in town. Ben 'utility' Telford has already added two positions in the quest for the ultimate utility.
Catcher
Left Field
Coming soon, the quest continues. Last season he went within an inning at shortstop of becoming the ultimate utility. After many years of trying, will this finally be the year? |
