1sts vs Essendon - Lost 5-0
The firsts have once again been defeated, 5 - 0 Thursday night by the strong Essendon side at Melbourne Ballpark. Top liner John Edwards got the win over 5 innings on 1 hit 5 strikeouts 1 base on balls 2 wild pitches. Robbie Hondo took the loss over 4 innings on 6 hits 1 strikeout 4 base on balls and 2 earned runs. He was fantastic on the mound and did enough to give the team a shot, however hits were hard to come by with singles to Robbie Hondo & Matty Houlden.
1sts vs Newport - Lost 2-16
2nds vs Newport - Lost 5-10
This was one of the first games for the year that we were able to use our short game effectively. Early in the game we had lots of situations to move runners over using bunts and hit & runs, which for the majority were successful. After 4 innings, once we tied the game at 5, our bats and base runners were shut down and Newport took charge scoring 5 in the last inning whilst we were blanked in the last 2 innings, which ended being the difference between the two teams.
Ben Telford gave us another solid start going 4 innings, giving up 5 runs although only 1 or 2 of these were actually earned. Fielding again let us down. Justin Gourlay relieved and gave our team every opportunity to get the 3 outs required every inning, but once again the field did let our pitcher down.
Having said this, this game was one of our better performances of the year. We were given every opportunity to win this game and win it easily, however we lacked the ability to execute when required. Too many runners were left on base at the end of innings.
Lenny Chiverton once again was the stand out with the bat and on the bases with multiple hits and multiple stolen bases. Lenny also played a flawless game at 3 rd base with many assists.
3rds vs Newport - Lost 8-9
4ths vs Newport - Lost 5-7
Women's Division 2 vs BYE
Masters vs Greensborough - WON 8-3
Under 18 State vs Fitzroy - WON 9-8
Melb/Donc: 7000110 = 9 Fitzroy: 4400000 = 8
Getting up early Sunday morning is not so bad after all. To knock-off the undefeated top team 9-8 seems to make it all worthwhile. A well disciplined batting performance in the first dig yielded 7 runs from 7 hits and a base on balls with only one out. With Jacko starting on the mound, Fitzroy, not to be denied and showing why they were on top came back strongly with 4 runs in each of the 1st and 2nd to take the lead.
However, very strong relief from Josh and Rhetta held the Lions to only 3 scattered hits across digs 3 to 7 and they were unable to trouble the scorers again. The 5th dig had it all tied up on a Ben Cull BB, a stolen base, advanced to third on a Tom Arthur ground ball and scored on a Wild Pitch. The winning run was scratched out in similar style ... Rhett lead off with his 3rd hit, stole second, advanced to third on a Jacko hit to Centre and again crossed the plate courtesy of another WP.
Play of the day: Unfortunately we were on the receiving end of a great Triple Play. With none out and bases loaded in the second, Rhys lined to the second baseman (1 out), 4 to 6 (2 out) and 6 to 3 - side away. .... very snappy !!!!
Coach's quip: "A great team effort - contributions from everyone concerned". Hits: 3 - Rhett Mitchelhill; 2 - Josh Bevis, Dane Pearce, Ben Jackson, 1 - Andy Mann, Rhys Aldenhoven, Tom Ryan. RBI's: 2 - Rhys, Tom R; 1 - Andy, Rhett & Dane. Next Week: Essendon @ Essendon - Boeing Reserve, Boeing Road, Strathmore.
Under 16 State vs Werribee - Won 11-5
It’s that day Sunday again. Up at 7am, thanking your stars it’s a home match and briefly looking out the window to survey the conditions. All signs positive, a tad overcast, no red sky (remember the old saying) and most importantly the duck is not chasing his tail (a sure sign of rain). Werribee, our old sparring partners 2 years back, were going to roll those pesky Demons without showing any signs of remorse. So did they? Not this time. So how did it unfold?
Well, not always to script …. for either side. The Melbourne boys, expecting to swing predominantly at fast balls from right handers, found themselves on the end of a variable speed lefty with some decent movement going down.Cam opening the game on the mound and duelled with the Werribee batters coming off with a ground out, fly out and SO but 1ER and 1UER.
Bryce led off the batting (BB), Brad threw up a R/F fly which caused some mischief to the fielder allowing Bryce to 2 nd, Tristan bounced one to the Pitcher who nailed him at 1st however it also advanced Bryce to 3 rd and Brad to 2 nd. Emmo occupied 1 st after a walk and Justin let rip with a C/F fly double that got both Bryce and Brad home. Alex swinging sharply boomed a C/F fly-out that brought Emmo home and moved Justin to 3 rd who then stole home on a passed ball to Cam. Cam eventually walked so did Harley and Jack rifled a ground ball to S/S who took him out at 1 st. Score 4 - 2.
Top of inning 2 with Cam still toiling away saw several field errors produce 1 UER but no real damage. In response the Demons kept the pressure up. Bryce trying to hit an unstable target ended up taking a drinks break, Brad (left hitter) needed to bat right handed to hit the one that hit him, Tristan battled strongly and forced a walk moving Brad to 2 nd and Emmo slapped one at the S/S who found it too hot and in the confusion allowed Brad to run in for the 5 th. Justin bombed a deep L/F fly only to be caught then Alex cast a spell on the ball as it somehow found a way through the S/S, Tristan seizing the opportunity stormed home like the Flying Scotsman while Emmo silently slipped to 2 nd. The inning ended with Cam popping up to the catcher. Score 6 - 3.
Inning 3 and Cam still holding the upper hand finished his stint with a pop up to 3 rd, a R/F fly-out and a SO. Again field errors played a big part allowing 2 UERs.
Bottom of the 4 th started with Harley popping up to the pitcher, Jack steering a single through S/S then steeling 2 nd, Bryce going down on some good pitching, Brad singling to R/F bringing home Jack and Tristan unluckily being caught at L/F. Score 7 - 5.
Top of the 4 th and it was Alex turn to occupy the mound and he produced some well controlled pitching that resulted in 3 ground outs from Cam at S/S to “T” at 1 st (I think both opposing shortstops must have had magnets fitted). The Demons batting reply was rather short with 3 fly-outs and a walk. Score 7 - 5.
The game was close with neither side able to break away so the 5 th was going to be crucial.
Alex pitching the last set up a rapid fire double play from Jack to Cam to Tristan and finished with a 2 nd to 1 st out. The guys only needed to last to 11:55 in the batting box and the game was theirs (time would have been called). Well they did that and more. Harley unfortunately ran into a barrage of good breaking balls then Jack walked, Bryce struck a low penetrating line drive to R/F, Brad thumped a banana bender down the L/F line bringing Jack over the plate, Tristan took a walk, Emmo carved one to R/F getting Bryce and Brad home and Justin trickled an awkward get to the pitcher scoring Tristan on the attempted out at 1 st. At this point the umpire had seen enough and called time. Final score 11 - 5.
Werribee have been playing well this season so it was gratifying to come away with the win. A few notable efforts this week, Cam and Alex for a sterling job on the hill, some terrific scrambling in the field at 2 nd base by Jack, the big “T” steady as ever on 1 st, Emmo, Brad, Justin and Bryce providing some fire power when needed with the bat and Harley doing his bit in the outfield.

Melbourne Blue Def Malvern Braves 10-5
Matt Meyers started on the mound and got through 2 innings of reliable pitching - we batted so well on the night we only had time for a couple of innings of defensive work before time was called. We scored heavily in every innings, good hitting from Matt Meyers, Liam Kenyan, Cooper Gerwing, Stephen Ellul, Titus Lin and Grant Kennerley knocked in 17 runs over 3 innings - reverting back to a comfortable 10-5 scoreline. We had some help with Sean Rintoul filling in for the Blue team making a few plays at SS including a hard hit line drive fly ball and hitting wel
Teeball
Teeball week four, Friday, November 23, 2007.
Our Teeball kids are developing already, getting the hang of batting and catching. After a jog and some warm-up exercises, they practiced catching and throwing with Joel and Harry helping coach Adam with a demonstration. Adam then split the group and some practised their fielding while others batted. Hamish’s Dad Darren helped the kids with their swing while Jamie’s dad James did a great job with the actual hitting. They were joined by Jessica, Harrison, Nathan and new boys Jack, 7, and Lucas, 5, whose grandfather Terry also helped out.
It was great to see the batting improve after such a short time. Nathan and Joel continued their big hits and Hamish, Jess and the others did really well too. Adam then finished off with a game, where everyone had a turn batting and fielding.
New children are still welcome; anyone interested should contact Stuart Rintoul, srintoul@bigpond.com, 0438 809 181.
