Results

1sts vs Blackburn - Lost 1-16

The 1sts were once again was defeated 16 - 1 yesterday by the powerful Blackburn lineup.

Cameron Hardy blew the batters away with 9 strikeouts over 6 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 earned run. Catcher Nathan Jones was the only batter to put up any resistance getting the 3 hits ( 2 singles & a double ) for the day.

The three 1sts pitchers used in the game Andy Mann, Justin Gourlay and Campbell Wiggins are all juniors did a reasonable job going up against seasoned top line players however it takes more than one player to beat a team.

Women's Division 2 vs Footscray

We played a formidable opposition at a ground that is notoriously hard to win at. Today, however, we proved it can be done with a 10-2 winning result.

A fabulous effort by Katrina pitching the entire two hour game. And in the field a double play from Amanda at short to Rebecca Fielden on second and then to Shani at first was a textbook success. Play of the day went to the combined effort of Rebecca Clayton and Amanda Edwards. After what looked like a sure catch to third base, Rebecca in foul territory, it was misjudged at the last minute only to “deflect” off her head and be subsequently caught by Amanda!

A fine and mostly consistent batting performance included doubles to Amanda, Lee and Shani. We still left 12 runners on base when we usually leave much less – so there are still improvements to be made.Altogether it was a deserved win as we appeared the stronger and fitter team and the result was reflective of this.

2nds vs Blackburn - Lost 12-1

An 8 run second inning by Blackburn really set the tone for what was going to be a long day. Ben Telford came in and shut Blackburn completely down but by that stage all the damage had been done.Once again our fielding was woeful except for Lenny who was as near perfect at third base as you can get. He was the only one out their trying to help the pitchers out. It was good to see the return of one D Kitch, who has been confined to the coach's box of late due to a training mishap at the start of the season. We look forward to his cheeky smile, good sense of humor and will to win in the weeks to come. He will possibly remain on the disabled list until Christmas and after that... watch out other teams..

We had 3 hits. Having said that it was good to see Alex Hondo and Justin Gourlay in the hits column, whilst Brent chipped in with his usual one.

When Tino Martinez was a kid, he would hit over 200 balls off a tee into his back fence every day. I assume that’s why he is one of MLB’s most successful hitters of all time. Continuous training. Food for thought.

3rds vs Blackburn - Lost 0-16

4ths vs Blackburn - Won - Not sure of score, not on web

Masters vs Springvale - Score not on web

Under 18 State vs Essendon - Lost 1-5

Melb/Donc:  100 000 0 =  1
Essendon:  101 003 x  = 5

In a game a bit tighter than the score would suggest, we collected our one and only run when Josh lead off with a BB, moved around to second and third on a WP & PB respectively and came home on a Rhett ground ball to short. Over the following 6 digs we left 7 runners on base, but were unable to get the hits when we needed them. Both runs that scored for Essendon in the first and third reached base on the back of a HPB and BB leading off the inning. Not until the 6th did they gain the ascendency by scoring 3 runs on the back of 2 base on balls, a double and a single. Essendon registered 4 hits also but left only 4 runners on.

Once again our defense was ably lead by Rhett and Josh on the mound and although not quite as accurate as in past weeks did a sterling job all the same.

Play of the day:  A nice double play executed by Rhett on a line drive catch, then a 1 to 6 to get the out at second.
Coach's quip:          "Come along ready to play tough ball each week and we're in with a chance"
Hits:            one each to Ben Jackson, Rhett Mitchelhill, Liam Davine and Dane Pearce.
RBI's:                  one to Rhett
Next Week:        Springvale/ Haileybury at Surrey Park

Under 16 State vs Newport/Williamstown - Won 14-1

Match day and the weather was holding, typical for this time of the year, not being one thing or the other …. warmish but not hot, humid but not unpleasant, cool breeze when under the trees and bursts of intense sunshine through a patchwork arrangement of clouds out in the open. Marty and Mark were busy in the batting cage measuring and cutting some curtains (new age men, uh!), Narrelle and Anne getting the canteen fired up, our pinup field umpire Tim (from the north country) limbering up with a tube of sunscreen, Malcolm trundling around with the grooviest machine on the block (line painter), Jo setting the scoring box (no, a banana lounge won’t fit in there!) and Hondo in the background giving final instructions to his over-breakfasted team. All was as it should be.

9 am, game underway with Alex pitching. Initially a little unsteady but recovered enough to allow just 1 unearned run. The reply inning was long despite 2 early outs N/W struggled to get the 3 rd one. Bryce led off with a walk and Brad went out swinging with Tristan following suit. Emmo drilled a R/F double then Justin knocked out a L/F single advancing Emmo to 3 rd. Alex bounced one off his body therebye loading bases and Cam could only manage a walk forcing Emmo over the plate for the 1 st run. Harley also took a body blow advancing all runners and walking Justin back to home for run 2. Jack strolled to 1 st bringing Alex in for run 3 and Bryce followed suit scoring Cam. Eventually Brad having a second crack at it spooned a L/F fly for the 3 rd out. Score 5-1. Top of the 2 nd and Alex had N/W on the ropes with a R/F flyout and 2 SOs.

Bottom of the 2 nd and Tristan swung his way into the shed, Emmo slapped one at the S/S who duly took him out at 1 st, Justin ripped a ground ball through 3 rd for a double and Alex smashed a towering C/F triple scoring Justin but then eager to notch up a running homer was given out sliding into home plate. Score 6-1.

Top of the 3 rd and a nice clean 2 nd to S/S got the lead-off batter but just failed to get the double play. This was followed by a L/F flyout and a low pop-up to 1 st. Cam led off the batting with a walk, Harley returned to the shed for more weetbix, Jack fired a R/F line drive single getting Cam on 3 rd who then stole home on a wild pitch and Jack also moved to 2nd, Bryce finding the gap in R/F made 1 st and got Jack to 3 rd, Brad walked loading bases, then Tristan also walked getting Jack over the plate. Emmo walked scoring Bryce and Justin had his ribs tickled therebye walking Brad home for the 10 th run. Alex went walkies so did Tristan over home plate and Cam singled to C/F bringing in Emmo for the 7 th run of the inning (side away). Score 13-1.

Emmo was thrown the ball to pitch the 4 th and started well with 3 up 3 down after a pick-off to 2 nd and 2 SOs. Harley batting first swung out on some good pitching, Jack singled to R/F, Bryce hopped one to 2 nd who threw him out at 1 st but Jack advanced to 2 nd on the play and eventually stole 3 rd then home, Brad walked, Tristan walked and Emmo battling hard went down swinging. Score 14-1.

The final inning before time called saw Emmo pitch it out with a flyout double play from R/F to 1 st due to the runner not tagging up and the 3 rd out coming from a lead runner force at home plate when the batter tiddled the ball to Emmo.

In all a good result, maintaining the winning streak for the Team. Of course I can’t let the highlight of the day go unmentioned. Tim, our intrepid field umpire for this season, was promoted to main umpire until that is he called Alex out sliding into home plate bottom of the 3 rd. A dejected Tim was seen wandering the hill soon after looking for sympathy. However, it wasn’t quite as it would seem … no, he wasn’t ejected by the coach (Alex Dad) merely replaced by the real umpire of the day who had been delayed. Never mind Tim, I hear the masters team are looking for a ridgey didge umpire for Monday nights!

Under 16 Metro vs Waverley - Lost 6-18

Under 14 vs Springvale/Haileybury - Won 16-3

Little League vs Upwey / Ftg - lost 20-26

WOW what a score. Not often you score 20 runs in a game and lose!

Melbouren Blue - BYE

Teeball

(Report by Jessica Critchley-Roy as her Mum had a work function).

Boy there were lots of flies this week, but about eight kids turned up and we had a good time. Adam took us for a run and some exercises first, then we did some throwing and catching. We are getting the hang of it a bit now. He also showed us how to run between bases, which was a good help. He taught us a special question mark move to get around the bases.

I tried to explain it to mum but she didn’t get it very well. I can’t remember all the names but I think Mason, Madeleine, Joel, Harry, Harrison and Hamish were there. Everyone did a good job and we are learning some more skills as we go. Adam is a good coach.

We finished up with a miniature game and we all had a bat and a field. There were fielders and then we had the batspeople. Most people did some big hits.

New children are still welcome; anyone interested should contact Stuart Rintoul, srintoul@bigpond.com.
