1sts vs Essendon - Lost 0-12
The 1sts have been defeated 12 - 0 by the heavy hitting Essendon lineup at Essendon.
15 year old Campbell Wiggins started for 1sts and did a reasonable job for his first game at the top level. Facing a batting line up of outstanding players he was not overwhelmed by the occasion.
Several fielding errors didn't help. But worst was again the inability to overcome the experienced Essendon pitching staff.
Essendon's ace Casey Jones got the win in a superb display over 5 innings for 2 hits and no runs.
Hits were hard to come by with Rhett Mitchelhill hitting a double & a single. The only other hit was a single to Nathan Jones.
1sts vs Sunshine - Lost 1-15
The 1sts have again defeated 15 - 1 yesterday by Sunshine at Surrey Park. The young batters faced Australian pitcher Greg Wiltshire and struggled. Wiltshire got the win over 6 innings on 3 hits with 6 strikeouts and no runs. Andy Mann took the loss over 6 innings for 2 hits, 4 base on balls and 6 earned runs. Trailing 3 - 0 after 6 innings looked to be still in the game but a disastrous 7th innings when 6 runs scored put an end to that. Hits were few with 3 singles to Rhett Mitchell, Sean Edwards a single & Robby Hondo a double.
Last game before Xmas is Thursday night vs Doncaster at Doncaster 6pm start.

So far the season has been one of missed opportunity. So many games early on in the season were lost by a very narrow margin and only time will tell if those early close loses will cost. There are 11 games remaining. Still plenty of time to improve and do some damage in the W column.
Women's Division 2 vs Chelsea - Won 10-5
Although Chelsea had 7 players the game was neck and neck until we found our rhythm. With consistent batting we began to find the gaps to score runs. Our fielding was solid all day. Another difficult to win at against an 'agressive' opponent. Melbourne was comfortable at 10-5 when an injury to a Chelsea player resulted in an abandoned game at 3:34pm.
Melbourne v Doncaster Won 7-4
Terrific Tuesday night game against Doncaster at Surrey Park saw Melbourne win 7-4. Great pitching by Katrina and Shani backed by a solid fielding performance by all. Consistent batting saw us eventually outscore a competitive Doncaster side.
It was great to see some supporters watching our game - it gave us a real 'lift'. Thanks to Malcolm for our bbq and to those who stayed behind to share it.
Congratulations to Bec Clayton who won our weekly fruit basket raffle provided by Belinda's mum and "Get Fresh" from Boronia and Vermont.

A look at the ladder so far sees Melbourne on top. A win last week against Doncaster put them a game clear. A finals berth is assured but getting there isn't really the goal anymore. Well done so far, keep up the hard work.
2nds vs Essendon - Lost 4-24
It was going to be a tough day for the 2’s facing an Essendon team who played a handful of ones players being A.J Kelly, Nathan Mackenzie & Stephen Lehmann. Subsequently A.J hit the walk off home run to end the 1sts game.
Despite the opposition, Bryce Taylor (first game in the 2nds) did what he has been doing all year in the 3rds, he had command over the strike zone and got experienced hitters to make uncharacteristic mistakes. This was by far our BEST starting pitcher we have had this year. Bryce threw a lot of first pitch strikes which set him up to control the rest of the at bat. Bryce only gave up 2 walks (one being intentional).
If the field had of supported Bryce we would have come close to winning this game. The field allowed seven unearned runs during Bryce’s outing. If your pitcher is out there battling for you, keeping you in the game, to then allow 7 runs from errors is almost criminal. Bryce contunially got ground balls but unfortunately with a total of 8 infield errors all but ended this one,
We also welcomed Josh Bevis to the team this week. Josh was the stand out in the outfield and was a major contributor with the bat.
Hits: B. Telford (Triple & Single), J. Bevis (Single, 2 RBI’s), G. Van Schie (Single) & B. Mann (Single).
2nds vs Sunshine - WON 6-5
In his second start for the Men’s Seconds, Bryce Taylor once again dominated the strike zone as he pitched the team into a winning position. The first 2 innings from Bryce were nasty to say the least striking out 4 and throwing a total of 28 pitches.
Having a healthy command over his pitches he continued his great work through the next 3 innings (91 pitches, 58 strikes & 33 balls). We got a fright when our infield got up to its old tricks again giving away the only runs of the day. Enter Ben Telford. Shut out relief work by the cagey right hander ensured we had a chance.
In the batting box we really didn’t set the world on fire with all bar one of our runs coming from walks or pass balls. So congratulations must be paid to Josh Bevis who actually hit our only run in with a clutch triple in the last inning.
A pass ball in the last allowed Bryce to score the go ahead run and our first win of the year.
Hits went to Josh (incl RBI), Gavin, Brendan (incl RBI) & Alex

The win last week is so far the only one for the season. However Melbourne have been in the position to win many so far and have failed to go on with the game. With much improvement so far this season, after Christmas there is a real chance to improve.

A few wins early on in the season had Melboure in the 4 however a few narrow losses since has seen them slip out of the 4. Still only a couple of games away though and that is pretty easy to make up with games against the top teams still to come after the break.

The very seniors have had a few wins so far and find themselves equal 4th with a small gap to 6th. This should hold them in good stead for the rest of the season however anything can happen. Hopefully they have enough experience to continue the wins and climb even higher.
Under 18 State vs Springvale / Haileybury - Lost 8-11
Springvale / Haileybury: 352 10 = 11 Doncaster / Melbourne: 101 42 = 8
The damage was done early as Springvale / Haileybury put together some strong hits off Liam who took to the mound for his first start of the season. He did a very serviceable job, and had a couple of 'half outs' gone his way it could have been a very different story. Rhett relieved Liam in the third to put the brakes on. Some indifferent defense did not help the cause and it wasn't until late in the game that the boys started to show some true form. The two guys who entered from the bench (Josh & Rhys) came out fighting to pick up 6 RBI's between them.
Play of the day: Andy, behind the dish collected an outfield throw on a late play at the plate and despite the slide threw the batter out attempting second. Coach's quip: "Good to see the fightback; but let's not leave it so late". Hits: 3 - Josh Bevis, 1 each to Rhett Mitchelhill, Andy Mann & Rhys Aldenhoven. RBI's: 3 ea to Rhys & Josh; 2 - Ben Cull Next Week: Preston @ Deep Creek Reserve, Doncaster
Meldons Vs Preston - WON 5-2
Preston: 000 101 0 = 2 Donc / Melb: 012 020 x = 5
A very fine performance all up - aggression in the batting box and defensively strong to take the points from Preston. Against very solid pitching, the lads were able to get on base and worked hard to push the runners across the plate. After scoring 1 off a Jacko hit in the second, Liam put some space between the teams with a 2 run single in the 3rd. Rhys whacked his second triple in 2 weeks to score Andy and Rhett continued his excellent season to bring Rhys home. Josh started on the mound and went 5 digs giving up only one run. Rhetta took over and also gave up only one run behind some very tight defence - definitely a complete turn a round from last week. Going into the Christmas break, we are currently in 9th spot with 3 wins and 2 draws. However, this is only a game and a half outside the four, so a strong finish in the last 4 games should see us have some bearing on who makes up the four come finals time.
Play of the day: On a good shot to right field for a double, the batter attempting fate was thrown out at third on a throw from David Reeves, with Liam relaying the ball at second base for Andy to complete the tag at third. Coach's quip: When we put our minds to the task at hand, anything's possible - well done. Hits: 2 - Andy Mann; 1 ea to Josh Bevis, Dane Pearce, Rhys Aldenhoven, Liam Davine, Ben Jackson & Rhett Mitchelhill. RBI's: 2 - Liam; 1 ea to Rhys & Rhett Next Week: Nothing next week - lets have a break - back at it on 28 January @ Werribee
Good luck to those boys playing representative ball in the New Year. Andy, Rhys and Rhett.

A very large comp this one with 12 teams. Every team has had at least one draw with the leaders having 3. This has helped to keep the comp very even with Melbourne / Doncaster sitting on 8 points, 2.5 games or 5 draws from 4th spot.
Under 16 State vs Bonbeach - Drew 8-8
A trip to Bonbeach is, for us, the least challenging, navigation wise, of the baseball season. Once on Middleborough Road it’s no deviations until the roundabout, a Fletcher punt kick from the ground, past golf courses, an airport and paddocks with larger beasts than you would find in your average suburban backyard. Sunday morning was mild although you could sense it would get a whole lot warmer. The Team seemed to be taking their queue from the weather and that’s the way the game panned out.
1 st inning and Bryce led off swinging against some good pitching and rejoined the queue on the bench, Brad didn’t get a look in with 4 straight balls and walked to 1 st, Tristan drilled a low cutter to left field evading the 3 rd baseman which brought Brad in for the first run, Emmo skyed a fly-out to L/F giving T enough time to tag up and bolt home for run 2. Justin was walked so were Alex and Campbell then Harley having a red hot go returned to the dugout for refreshments. Brad took up position on the mound and made an easy 1 st out (pitcher to 1 st) but then things got rather tough very quickly. A few field errors, a couple of walks and all of a sudden the run score blew out to 6-2 in Bonbeach’s favour.
Top of the 2 nd and Jack lifted a fly ball to R/F then tore up the en-tous-cas all the way to 3 rd, Bryce was back to the shed, Brad rolled one to 2 nd who duly threw him out at first but Jack swiftly ran over the plate for run 3 on the play. T walked, Emmo walked then Justin floated a bouncer to the pitcher who despatched him at 1 st. Alex swung into action on the hill and forced 2 hits to S/S for regulation outs at 1 st and a SO however further field errors gave Bonbeach another run. Score 7-3.
Third inning and the Demons continued to chip away with Alex driving the ball to S/S who fumbled the pickup, Cam blasting a monster to the L/F running track and flying the bases like Matt Shirvington being chased by a jaguar scoring himself and Alex, Harley firing one at 3 rd base who pinged him on 1 st, Jack popping up to 2 nd and Bryce smacking a line drive to the pitcher who was quick enough to take it. Alex continued on the mound and won an 8 pitch 1 st at-bat duel but then a few walks and an error allowed a run to score. The inning finished with a SO and S/S run-on out at 2 nd. Score 8-5.
The 4 th saw Brad walk after making body contact with the ball, T wandering back to the dugout, Emmo walking, Justin pounding a L/F fly double scoring Brad and Emmo, Alex sending a groundball to L/F but being tagged out sliding 2 nd however getting Justin home, Cam whipping a high fly ball deep into L/F for a 3 baser and Harley swinging out. Alex nearing the pitch count had 3 up 3 down with a hit straight to T at 1 st and 2 SOs. Score 8-8.
The 5 th was tense with the game up for grabs. Jack, first up, went out on a groundball to the pitcher, Bryce walked, Brad returned to the bench, T walked, Emmo walked and Justin also resumed a bench seat. Alex pitched the 1 st batter then Justin relieved with the outs coming from a catcher to 3 rd pickoff, a SO and a pitcher groundout to 1 st. Phew too close for comfort!
Bonbeach showed that you can never be complacent and they rightly earned half the points today. The Demons made a number of errors early in the game which Bonbeach to their credit took full advantage of. I blame that straight monotonous strip of bitumen between Burwood and Bonbeach …. it sent our guys to sleep! Perhaps we could request the Councils put in a few extra roundabouts and maybe even a chicane or two? Not too close to the airport though …. I already duck when one of those mosquitoes appears out of no where, I wouldn’t want to be halfway through a chicane when that happens!

Ladder speaks for itself. There is a strong chasing pack lead by Waverley and Essendon who are sure to be there at the pointy end of the season.
Under 16 Metro vs Sandringham - Lost 6-18
Facing a team towards the top of the ladder, it was always expected to be a tough game but after the win last week the team was full of confidence. Tom Dundon started on the mound and pitched a lot of strikes early, however a couple of hits combined with a couple of errors had Sandringham posting 7 runs.
Despite the being quickly behind the eight ball, the team stuck to it and started to hit. Tom and the field improved as the game went on and two thirds of the way through it was 10-5 and with bases left loaded a couple of times things may have been different.
Tom came out of the game after his count and Nick Hollingworth came in and did a pretty good job throwing plenty of strikes. Corey came on to close down the game but unfortunately ran into the top of the order who found a few gaps to blow out the score at the end. It was good to see that the team kept with it after the first inning and kept fighting right to the end. Well done.

A couple of wins so far and much improvement so far with the team really starting to gell both on and off-field. With hard work at training, more Wins will come and Melbourne will continue to climb.

Ladder speaks for itself. Not one match report all season though. What is going on down there at Myrtle Park on a Sunday morning? Sounds pretty good.
Little League vs Moorabbin - WON 15-14
Plenty of talk before the game about the 3 rd. placed Moorabbin and their big left handed pitcher but we were buoyed form our success on Friday night and came to play. The game started with a fantastic fly at Right field by Cooper and we never looked back. The reds started hitting the ball from the outset, the whole team, and we drew to a strong early lead. Brodie was the lead off and started with a double to Right Centre. Callum continued his good form with the bat and David started to realize his full potential. Liam gets better on the mound each week and Justin came into relieve after 3 innings and also did a good job. Matt has also improved behind the plate and let very few passed him. Melbourne not only won but looked a better team all day; several infield balls were put out at first including a hot one by Lachlan at 2 nd. base. Moorabbin scored 7 in the last to make the game look close but all should be happy with their game.

Again a very very even comp with Melbourne 1 game from the 4. Keep improving guys and the wins will continue.
Friday night – Little League Derby – Melbourne RED 11 d Melbourne BLUE 4
Our first Little League Derby started with plenty of trash talk from both teams. We lined up on the base paths, sang a dodgy National anthem, and got set to play for a new trophy; the pressure was on from the start. The game was tight in the early stages with Sean holding the Blue hitters and David doing a great job behind the plate. The Red hitters started hitting the ball and continued throughout the night. Walks are not allowed on Fridays, so the Coach comes into pitch after 4 balls, his first 3 pitches were hit for 3 solid doubles to add to the fun. Charlie made several put outs from 3 rd. base which kept the Blue runners off base. The night ended in a fun BBQ in the rooms and a great rivalry was born.

Teeball
Teeball week Six, Friday, December 7, 2007.
Joel and Jess were so keen to have a hit on Friday night they did some batting and fielding before the others arrived. Once everyone was there, Adam took the kids for a run right down to the trees on the other side of the grounds.
They then did some throwing, with Madeline, Joel, Jess, Harry, Jamie, Harrison and Nathan all doing really well. Madeline tried hard with her technique, and Joel and Harrison did some fantastic throws.
Next Adam said he was going to try something different, and set up the bases with Joel at first base, Jess at second, Harry at third and Harrison at short stop. Jamie and Madeline started the running, which saw everyone learn how and when to run around the bases.
It was a bit tricky to remember what to do at first, but by the end of the session most runners had the hang of it. Jamie’s dad James also took some extra hitting practice off to the side. It was a great session and everyone is progressing well with their skills.
New children are still welcome; anyone interested should contact Stuart Rintoul, srintoul@bigpond.com.
Teeball report for week seven, Friday December 14.
A SMALL but dedicated group saw out the Teeball year. Harry and Jamie didn’t let the Christmas festivities deter them, so had some great personalised batting and fielding practice with coach Adam.
Teeball sessions are now finished for 2007 and will resume on Friday, February 1, 2008. New children are still welcome; anyone interested should contact Stuart Rintoul, srintoul@bigpond.com.
