1sts vs Malvern - Lost 5-9
For the 4th time this season Melbourne have been leading or level going into the 9th inning and for the 4th time have come away with a loss. This may be becoming an all too common line but it really was the best Melbourne has played all season. Melbourne out hit with the difference in the end being walks and hits at the right time to Malvern. Brad Harman started for Melbourne at shortstop but Malvern were reluctant to pitch to him and he drew two walks, 1 error and 1 line drive to right field caught out.
Daryn Cassidy was outstanding both with ball and bat. Starting on the mound he pitched superbly for 5 innings, striking out 8 and giving up 1 earned run. He then had 4 hits ( 3 singles & a double ) driving in 1 run. Other hits went to Will Keys ( 2 singles & a double ), Sean Edwards ( single & double ) and singles to Robbie Hondo & Matty Houlden ( 2 rbis ). A cruicial game comes on Thursday evening at Surrey Park against 9th placed Cheltenham - 6pm start time. Come on down and enjoy a BBQ after the game. $5 all you can eat.

2nds vs Malvern - Lost 5-11
3 new faces this week for a game against fourth placed Malvern. Warren Brown & Justin King made their debut for the MCC, whilst Travis Fegan once again came out of retirement. Another great start to the game from Bryce Taylor and our bats did the talking early with Telen Stanfield leading the game off with a single and 2 stolen bases, then Brendan Mann drove him in with a sac fly.
Our second inning had a lead off walk to Justin King, followed by a single from Brent Davine. Travis Fegan moved both runners over with a ground ball and then Bryce knocked in both runners with a single up the middle. At this stage things were moving along very well, but errors reared their ugly head, which cost us crucial runs again. The worst being 3 runs scored from a home run (only the hitter being an earned run). Bryce came out of the game with the score at 6-3 after using his 90 pitches and the ball was turned over to Ben Telford in the 5 th.
From that point, walks and fielding errors cost us another 5 runs, whilst we could only amass another 2. End score being 11-5. Highlights in the field were Brendan Mann in centre and Telen at short. Terrific defensive games by each. This was a game we should have won.
3rds vs Malvern - Lost 2-9
The team presently known as the thirds got 2008 going at the enviable grounds of the Malvern Baseball Club. Malvern’s thirds might not be the force they were last year but they still carried more than enough senior talent to ensure the young Demon thirds had there work cut out for them if they were to add that elusive 2 to the win column.
Things got going nicely with Ben Cull legging out an infield hit before a steal and a ball 4 four wild pitch gave us runners at the corners and none out. Harley promptly stole second and the stage was set for Melbourne Thirds legend Craig Mitchell to drive in our first run. Having played his first game for Melbourne in 1986 he’s probably got the job done in more glorious fashion than a slow roller but Ben had the speed and the only option for the Malvern third baseman was first. Adam Promnitz delivered Melbourne’s second run with a base-hit up the middle. It was a play that could have comfortably been scored an error as the shortstop practically kicked it but let’s be honest - who cares how you do it.
The two run lead did not last long as Malvern got the bottom half of the first going by loading the bases with a hit, a walk and a wild throw. Andrew Williams then strategically tunnel balled a ball at left field to test the supreme backing up skills of Hsien and it was 3-2. The pain didn’t end there as the fourth run scored on a hit before the 6th hitter in Malvern’s line up stuck-out only to reach on a wild pitch. Ryan Davine finally got rewarded with an out when the 7 hitter K’d looking and when the innings ended two hitters later the score was 5-2.
Ryan then locked in and whilst the Melbourne offence was getting base runners (largely off the bat of Liam Davine) but not scoring them, Ryan was ploughing through the experienced Malvern line-up. At one stage he had retired eight straight before issuing a walk and retiring the side a hitter later.
In the end it was all about timeliness – Malvern only out-hit Melbourne 7 to 6 but were able to get runners on base a total of 14 times for nine runs. Melbourne on the other hand could only plate two first innings runs despite nine runners reaching first.
4ths vs Malvern - Won 11-8
No match report submitted. So lets assume that Melbourne scored 11 runs in the top of the first and then slowly got realed in only to just hold on with Malver scoring 5 runs in the last.
