1sts vs Waverley - Thursday - Lost 0-2
The firsts have gone down 2 - 0 to Waverley on Thursday night in a very tense two hour time game at Waverley. Winning pitcher was Waverley's Mathew Flemming who threw a shut out over 9 innings. Daryn Cassidy took the loss for MCC also going 9 innings but conceding 2 earned runs. Neither pitcher had conceded a run for almost 90 minutes.
With Waverley runners at second and third, the batter was intentionally walked to load the bases for the force play. The next batter up was hit pitched ball which walked the first run in. A sacrifice fly followed and Waverley had all scored the only runs for the game. 9 innings in 1:45. Good defensive game by both teams but a costly loss.
Next game Sunday at Surrey Park vs Waverley again.
1sts vs Waverley - Sunday - Lost - 1-5
Waverley have made it two in a week by defeating the 1sts 5 -1 by at Surrey Park on Sunday. With the score line 1 all going into the top of the 9th innings Waverley scored 4 runs to win the game. Donovan Hendricks was the winning pitcher for Waverley over 4 innings on 2 hits with 8 strike outs and no runs. MCC coach Andrew Fennell took the loss over 8 1/3 innings. Brad Harman had 2 doubles in his final game before heading to spring training with the Phillies. Sean Edwards & Chris Cassidy both had doubles and a single to Robbie Hondo.
Melbourne opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st, however that is where it remained for much of the game. In the 5th, a solo home run to Waverley hitting with the wind tied it up. While there were few opportunities to put on another, Melbourne did have the chance but failed to find the go ahead run before the 9th to put more pressure on Waverley.
It was a game again characterised by solid defence by both teams in windy conditions. A number of solid outfield catches were taken on the fence by Melbourne to take hits away from Waverley, backing up Andrew Fennell who again, threw a fantastic game.
With 3 games remaining MCC need to win all games and hope results go their way if they are to stay in Div 1.
Next game is Sunday at Newport
Women's Division 2 vs Chelsea - Won 13-3
2nds vs Waverley - Lost 0-7
2 hits for the game, one each to Rhett Mitchelhill & Brendan Mann.
Congratulations to Rhett on a speedy return to baseball from a serious leg injury and to Brad Dicker for playing his first game in the seconds.
Tough day for Bryce, he nearly got through his 90 pitches but too many cheap hits by Waverley ended his day. Ben Telford was effective in relief not giving up a run.
3rds vs Waverley - Lost 0-5
4ths vs Waverley - Lost 6-7

Under 18s vs Upwey - Lost 1-11

Never really in the game, Upwey jumped out of the blocks to have a good lead after 3 innings of 5-0. Their pitching was very solid and they didn't allow our batters to get into the game. Unfortunately, as they game progressed the boys seemed to relax in the field, the concentration waivered with the result being too many errors creeping into play. It was good to see Ben Cull resume hostilities after damaging his ankle a few weeks back and we played with a starting 9 for the first time since the break.
Liam started and completed four digs. Rhett relieved at the bottom of the 5th for 1.2 digs before Upwey closed out the game via the 10 run rule.
Play of the day: Double Play - with 1st & 2nd occupied, ground ball to Rhys at 3rd, played the base and made a fast accurate throw to 1st to beat the batter. Coach's quip: Started well, but couldn't keep it together in the latter digs. Hits: Tony Clapp, Josh Bevis & Dane Pearce. RBI's: Nil Next Week: to finish the season ... Bonbeach at Doncaster
Under 16 State vs Doncaster - Won 20-6
Under 16 Metro vs Mulgrave - Lost 2-13
Under 14 vs Upwey Tigers - Won 17-5
After their first loss of the season last week the Demons have hit back with a solid if not spectacular win. Supercoach Des was satisfied with a win against one of the teams in the lower reaches of the ladder. He told the boys their performance has dropped off a little & the team must now fully focus on the finals. The bats have
HITS: Ross (3), Shaffer (2, incl. HR), Hayman (2, incl.HR), Dunbar (2), Kelly (1), Polites (1), Rintoul (1).
PITCHING:
Scheffer 3 1/3 innings; 4 Hits, 5 BB's, 7K's;

Melbourne Reds 4, 0,3,6,4 = 17
Doncaster 3, 0,3,1,0 = 7
Another great “team win” with all players contributing to a strong performance and our 4 th. win. Justin Limburg was a star all day; he pitched 3 plus innings and held some pretty strong hitting to 6 runs. In the batting box, Justin had 5 safe hits and 5 RBI’s from 5 appearances, after only batting right handed for 2 games, he has been a left hander for the rest of the season? Charlie Keyhoe had 3 hits and 2 base on balls and also hit well. Cooper Morris, Callum Kent, Lachlan Padbury, Sean Rintoul and David Slape all had 2 hits including some towering hits from David with two doubles. Brodie Rebbechi and Matt Myers also hit well and could consider themselves unlucky not to have hit safely. Matt Myers and Callum Kent should be mentioned for their flawless 1 st. and 2 nd.. base work early in the game. Sean finished the pitching in the last two innings and held Doncaster for the win.
We have now won 4 games, drawn 2 and are an outside chance the game to finish in the finals with 1 game to go, a long way from our first couple of games.
Little League Domestic
Friday night
Malvern Mets – 4,0,0,4 = 8
Melbourne Reds – 0,1,7,2 = 10
Malvern started well and ended with a bang but could not hold the Melbourne hitters for the full game. Callum Kent started his first game pitching after impressing at training on Wednesday and did a great job. Justin got a taste of catching his first game and caught well after getting the hang of it. Sean and Lachlan also did a great job later in the game pitching and catching. Melbourne still undefeated on Friday nights with a bye coming up this week.
Teeball
Teeballers dodge the rain. Friday, February 8, 2008.
A hardy bunch of Teeballers didn’t let dodgy weather stop them working on their catching and hitting on Friday. The weather held off long enough for Joel, Mason, Harry, Jessica, Jamie, Nathan and Harrison to finish a handy session. Coach Adam started with the usual jog and warm-up, before some much-needed catching practice. Joel took some great grabs and everyone else showed signs of improvement, especially when they concentrated.
Adam helped explain how important it is to move towards the ball. “When we’re catching we’re starting in front of the ball,” he said. “I want your other hand ready to catch it. If the ball’s over here just step to the ball.” The field was then set up for some hitting practice, with most fielders getting a turn on each base. Adam explained how to run the bases, and how those manning the bases could get the batters out.
Everyone then had a hit, with some really strong whacks from Joel, Mason and Jamie. Harry, Nathan, Jessica and Harrison also showed great style. Adam was really pleased with the session, which ended slightly early when the rain returned. He says those who attend regularly are already showing great improvement.
New children are still welcome; anyone interested should contact Stuart Rintoul, srintoul@bigpond.com.
