1sts vs Newport - Won 13-3
the 1sts have continued their late season form with a solid wih over Newport at Newport 13 - 3. In a very hot and surprisingly still day, tThe 10 run mercy rule was applied after 7 complete innings. Another excellent performance on the mound for MCC by Daryn Cassidy who got the win on 8 hits 9 strikeouts and 3 earned runs.
Losing pitcher for Newport was Ethan Tibbles over 2 innings on 5 hits 1 strikeout 3 base on balls and 5 earned runs. Hits were a plenty up and down the MCC line up. Coach Andrew Fennell was outstanding with the bat with a triple that drove in 3 runs and 2 singles for another 2 runs.
Singles to Nathan Jones ( 3 with 1 rbi ) Daryn Cassidy ( 2 ) Chris Cassidy ( 2 rbi ) Rhett Mitchelhill ( 1 rbi ) Matty Houlden ( 1 rbi ).
RBIs to Ben Telford and Brendan Mann ( 2 ) who did a super job in left defensively tracking down a number of flies.
There are 2 games left in the season ( Wed night & Sat afternoon ) and must win aboth of them in order to stay in Div 1 That also requires one of two teams losing their final encounter on Sunday.

There is a BYE in the final round for Melbourne. There is a BYE every 4th week. One questions the merit of a BYE every 4th week but the season is sown up for Melbouren and will wait for a week before beginning their finals campaign.
2nds vs Newport - Drew 8-8
3rds vs Newport - WON 12-5
The thirds closed out 2007/2008 by sending club veteran Craig Mitchell to the hill. Craig drew on his cricketing heritage to contain the Newport bats through an array of medium pacers and slower balls. Despite his McGrath like accuracy, Melbourne found themselves trailing five one with only half an hour left in the season. It has to be said that at this juncture this reporter was preoccupied with trying to come up with some kind of justification for the fact that the Melbourne threes had been kept to a single run by a guy who's fastball topped out in the mid 60s. As fortune would have it, such justification would not be needed as a lead-off single, an out and then a bevy of consecutive hits, a walk and a hit batter changed things completely. Nick Dundon finished the innings with two doubles and the Melbourne thirds finished the year 12 to 5 winners. It was just the second win of the year for the Melbourne thirds and somehow that was enough as, with the loss, Newport fell below Melbourne on percentage and earned themselves a wooden spoon to boot.
Making their Thirds debut was Steven Redfern who went two for two and Justin Gourley who calmly went 3 for 3 and was in the box a home-run short of the cycle when the blue called time and game.
As this will be the last Batchat report for 2007/2008 I'd like to thank all the loyal fans of the Melbourne Thirds, it has been my great honour to report on these particular custodians of our near 120 year old club even if it has been somewhat sporadic and in style, largely aloof. All the best to those teams whose season is not yet over - especially the U16s who made up such an important part of the Thirds this season.
A photo of the victorious Thirds is attached - it is quite appropriate of the thirds season as it's not very good - representative of the on-field results, but everyone is smiling which is the point of it all really.
Rear L-R: Shaun Mead, James Roy, Nick Dundon, Andrew Williams, Steven Redfern, Craig Mitchell
Front L-R: Jamie Hough, Jack Rintoull, Justin Gourley

Masters vs Bonbeach - Lost 3-11
Batchat Nation
See if you can make sense of this one. It appears that after a very even season, the Masters have made the finals and will play against an unknown team as yet. Full information should be on the VBA website shortly.
"Check the VBA website – appears to be a final ladder & we have made it – seemingly with a bit of % to spare - .486 c.f. .454
However Stan the Statistician has just rung with an update.
The 2 Bonbeach walkover wins appear as 0-0 in the results – surely they should be 3-0 results from their perspective.
So let’s add 6 runs to the Bonbeach for tally – on Stan’s calculations their % increases to…(drum roll)… .476 – so we are still in.
Not wanting to suggest we have cut it fine but going into the bottom of the last last night, at that stage they were .486 & we were .477 – when we scored 1 run, they were .482 & we were .480 i.e still out of the four but when we scored our second in the last, we went to.483 opposed to.479 – after that we were just cruising.
My Chris reckons he has never been to such an exciting sporting climax since he was at the Australia West Indies tied test!"

Under 18s vs Bonbeach - Won 12-5
Bonbeach: 110 010 2 = 5 Melb/Donc: 300 207 x = 12
A strong win to finish off the season. Both Bonbeach and the Meldons were on the same points in equal 9th so the sides were fairly evenly placed coming into the last match. Josh (4 digs) and Rhett with 2 threw terrific ball and were ably backed up by a very tight defence. Bonbeach hit the ball hard at times but the boys kept away from the big dig by only giving up single runs until the last. Up 5 to 3 in the 5th, the offence put it altogether in the 6th to score 7 runs which put the result out of reach of the visitors. The win saw us move to 8th on the ladder - not too bad an effort considering we were hamstrung by our 'better' players required for senior duty.
Play of the day: Tom Arthur collected his first base hit for the season at his last at bat with a ground ball single to drive in a run.
Coach's quip: Good way to finish the season.... nice win. Hits: 3 Rhys Aldenhoven & Dane Pearce; 1 Ben Cull, Rhett Mitchelhill, Tom Ryan & Tom Arthur. RBI's: 4 Dane; 3 Rhys and 1 each to Ben, Josh, Tony, Tom R& Tom A. Next Week: Don't bother - have a good sleep in !!!!
Season's thankyous: It was great to see all the boys from each side of the Yarra work together all season. The general consensus was that the combined team worked well and gave the lads the opportunity to have a run on Sunday mornings. As always, it just doesn't happen without the time and effort put in by the parents and friends around the clubs. Special thanks to Gary Arthur and Gavin Mann for coaching; Merryn Bevis and Linda Mann for sharing the scoring; to John and Sandy Cliff at Doncaster and to Malcolm Shiverton and Stewart Rintoul at Melbourne for arranging canteen duties, game balls etc.. Thankyou all very much.

Under 16 Metro vs Bonbeach - Lost 3-16
Under 14 vs Springvale / Haileybury - Won 20-1
A very good performance on both sides of the ball & a great tune up for next week's Second-Semi Final v. Blackburn-Waverley. The boys hit the ball extremely well, getting somewhere near their best again for the first time since the Christmas break. Our three pitchers were very impressive and they were well supported by a near error-free defence. We finished on top of the ladder with our only loss coming against Moorabbin. Unfortunately, our only scheduled game against our first opponent in the finals was a wash-out, so we will be unfamiliar with them. What we do know is we will need to bring our 'A' game and reproduce the form we showed today. Well done Des, his support staff led by Tony & all our talented group of boys. Now, let the games begin!
HITS: SCHEFFER (3), ROSS (3), KENT (2), KELLY (2), RINTOUL (2), MORRIS (2), POLITES, DUNBAR, DELATIKY, MIDDLETITCH, REUDIN.
PITCHING: SCHEFFER 2 INNINGS, 4K'S, 1BB, 0 HITS.

First game is against Blackburn / Waverley at home on Sunday 24th with 9am start. Get on down and support the under 14s.

Teeball
Teeball report from Friday, February 15.
Coach Adam was unable to attend on Friday so Under 16 metro coach Lenny Chiverton kindly stepped in and took charge of a small group of keen youngsters.
Lenny gave them some handy tips and encouraged them to continue their progress.
Adam should be back this Friday.
New children are still welcome; anyone interested should contact Stuart Rintoul, srintoul@bigpond.com.
