Batchat Round 14

If you have any match reports, junior, senior, men, women, masters, social, anything, send it in to demonsbc@yahoo.com by 9pm Tuesdays to get into the week's issue.

Dear FIRSTNAME,

Welcome back from the Christmas / New Year break and to round 13 of the Newsletter. With only a few more weeks to go in the regular season, many teams are well placed to figure in post season action.

The firsts started off well in their first game since the break against Sunshine, despite missing key personnel, they did enough to get the chocolates against an opponent that again enjoyed terrific service from Chris Prokupek but was unable to collar Melbourne import Brent Buffa – who spun a complete game shutout while amassing fourteen strikeouts in a commanding performance.

The remainder of the Men's and Women's competition starts this weekend, with juniors starting the week after.

Dates for resumption of games are:

  • Mens Division 1 Reserves, Thirds & Fourths & Division 4 games and Women's Division 3 resume this weekend 19th Jan
  • Women's Division 2 games resume 25th Jan
  • Masters games resume 20th Jan
  • Sunday Junior games resume 26th Jan
  • Friday night U12 games resume 31st Jan

1st Nine won 4-0

Kingsley Collins:

Missing key personnel, the Demons did enough to get the chocolates against an opponent that again enjoyed terrific service from Chris Prokupek but was unable to collar Melbourne import Brent Buffa – who spun a complete game shutout while amassing fourteen strikeouts in a commanding performance.

Holding sway into the seventh, Prokupek put up another gutsy performance to keep his side in the contest before the Eagles called upon evergreen Stuart Clayton in the absence of anticipated reliever Adam Irons.

Conceding just a handful of hits and two walks, Buffa strangled the Sunshine offence while Robert Hondromatidis and Slade Squire led the Melbourne hitting in a low-scoring affair.

“It was a pretty tight game over six and we were probably a little lucky to get away with the win,” Melbourne Assistant Coach David Simpson told Baseball Victoria.

“We didn’t play great but we’ll take it though.”

“Nobody really stood out with the bat for either side,” he said. “Their import kept us off balance and to our credit we just hung in there, had some long at bats and made him throw a lot of pitches.”

“I can’t speak highly enough of Buffa’s performance. To throw a complete game at this level – with so many strike outs – is fairly rare. He really stepped up in the absence of Andy Mann to help get us a very important win.”

“We have some tough games coming up. We know we have a lot of hard work facing us as a team and as individuals if we want to make the playoffs,” Simpson added.

“It’s still up in the air. Anything can happen.”

Clear leaders in their conference for the time being, the Demons will be away to Blackburn next Sunday for the first of a crucial double, while Sunshine faces a tough away game against Essendon in the knowledge that they have pushed several of the league powers and could well have enjoyed far more playing success.
