If you have any match reports, junior, senior, men, women, masters, social, anything, send it in to demonsbc@yahoo.com by 9pm Tuesdays to get into the week's issue.

Dear MEMBERFIRSTNAME,

As we are now into the season full swing we need to make sure we for those who have not paid fees as at today’s date are financial. We have just been given a Baseball Victoria directive, that ALL players must register and pay IMMEDIATELY through the registration system on our website. Failure to do so renders you IMMEDIATELY INELIGIBLE to play. Anyone playing unregistered will be fined by BV and this fine will be passed on to that player, the club will not pay this for you. This is out of our hands and the club also cannot register you, you must do it yourself. Please make this a priority.

Register and pay online here

On the field, the firsts were the only Senior Mens team to go down in a hard fought 7-4 loss to Blackburn, while the seconds scored their first win of the season, the thirds, fourths and Division 4 teams romped to big wins. All three Masters teams won their opening round games. The Womens teams have been very competitive with the 1st nine

Junior results were positive as well with the U16 State team recording a first up win against traditional pwerhouse Cheltenham and the Friday night teams have had a typically strong start as well.

T-Ball smash starts next Friday at Surrey Park 6PM, ages from 6 years and up. Come down for a fun night of games and activities.

Photos have been added to the web site from round 1 and 2 seniors and round 1 of juniors. Links for Seniors here and Juniors here, keep those photos coming.

Match Reports

2nd Nine Round 2 v Blackburn won 5-1

The Demons looked to even their winning record this week at the home opener with a bolstered lineup against the Blackburn Orioles.
Alex Hondromatidis had the ball today after returning from U25 Nationals in Cairns representing our state. A shaky first inning with a definitely uncharacteristic mental blank from the 3rd baseman who shall not be named saw the Demons trail 1-0.

Even with the Bolstered line up we did not score with opportunities arising almost every inning. Hondo had settled in and was pounding the zone getting soft contact and strikeouts. A great effort going to his pitch count in 80 pitches for 5 innings of work for the sole run.

The Demons the rallied with some great aggressive baserunning by Yoshi Hanami after getting on. With good approaches and discipline hitting we saw the starting pitcher out of the game after a go ahead wild pitch that Justin Limburg scored. Continued the pressure with Hondo hitting in a 2 run double to put us up further and that lead to us 5-1 up in to the last frame.

Limburg in his first appearance on the mound threw a scoreless last inning to get the 5-1 win. A great result for the Demons but we still search for that continuous improvement and aim for maximum potential and beyond throughout the year.

Cheltenham next week away will be a big game to get to 2-1.

Masters A 38+

CAGEY KENT CARVES OUT NEW CAREER AS CUNNING CHUCKER, as LOWE LAMENTS LACK OF LIGHT AND LACKLUSTRE LITERARY LICENSE!

The new-look younger old guys snuck in a cheeky 4-3 win thanks to the grace of the Research guys who let us start a few minutes late with not quite a full team. We welcomed some imports, with C-Net’s own Bryce Gammon making his return to the club, Warren Hill stepping over from North Balwyn Winter, and Ben Smith returning to the club (with a few more up our sleeve for next week...c’mon Harmer, you know you want to play)!

They scored three in the first off Murray thanks to a combination of a couple of quality hits and a couple that went straight down the throats of the fielders that we didn’t have! From memory - no problem, we scored two in the first and another two in the fourth with a triple to J.Bulge and a big sac to Damo. As the headline notes, highlight was Lardio spinning three shutout innings in his Masters pitching debut with Bryce closing the fifth to blow out a few pitching cobwebs. Big home game next week as the young bucks Over 38’s Masters A take on the triple Premiership Over 38 Masters B team led by Shane Haslam.

Masters B 38+
1st Game for the season.Melbourne B. 9. V. Doncaster. 5.

It was a very cold and slow start, Only 1 run scored in the 1st innings, Then nothing for the next 2, Then we finally decided it was time to go out and start to use our bats. Getting 4 runs in the 4th. Then 2 runs in the 5th and 6th innings. For a total of 9.

Doncaster had 2 runs in the 1st . 2 runs in the 3rd and 1 run in the 6th. Finishing their total of 5 runs.

There were 2. Errors made by us 1.to Peter Clapp and 1.to Scott Newey. Doncaster also made 2 errors.

BATTING:: Singles by Jez.Morilly, Ian Mosley, Haydn Marsten, Paul Robinson, Scott Newey,(2),Peter Clapp, Steve De-Witt, Shane Haslam,(2).

Glen Graham, Scott Coatsworth ( Rookie).

PITCHING:: Paul Tyndall. 4 innings. 1.HPB. 1 K. 7. Hits. For 4 earned runs.

Peter Clapp. 2 innings. 1.BB. 1.K. 2. Hits. For 1 unearned run.

Masters 45+

Aka the Senior team - bolstered by some new recruits from the Juniors, the 45+ team defeated Newport 5-1, but had to battle all night to score runs. We were outhit 6-3 but some great defence especially from the rookie Andrew Saggers and solid outings from Skinny and Randall on the mound gave us the defensive edge, one bad 0-2 pitch was the only blemish from a shutout. Rod Jackson had a game breaking double for the best hit of the night but the other runs were created from good at bats and moving guys over to score. All looks good for a positive season as we look to be younger on average than most teams.

Women Division 2 vs. Springvale lost 7-6

First midweek game of the year and possibly in history for women’s baseball at Surrey Park which was a great day yet had a bit of controversy thrown in the mix as the game was called because of light after only an hour and ½ of play with runners on base and one run the difference it was a sad way to end a game yet that’s the way the ball bounces as we outhit and outplayed the Lions for most of the game just another 10 minutes of light might have seen a different result.

We gave up 7 unearned run in the first dig on 2 hits and 7 walks and one error as we struggled to find the strike zone early however held the Lions the rest of the game. We came back and got 4 of our own on 3 hits in the bottom of the third dig. Bottom of the 4th saw the top of the line up coming up whereby we had 3 hits in a row the a sack fly to come within one with a runner on second base when the umpire called the game due to insufficient light. Tough way to end the game. I was impressed by the tenacity of this group of women when they didn’t give up and kept their heads up and fought their way back in to the game which says a lot about the character of this group. We will see them moving towards finals this year if they keep up this attitude throughout the year. Well done gals.

Leah got her maiden start for the Lady D’s and went 1 inning giving up 2 earned runs on 2 hits with 7 walks and 0 strike outs, a tough start as nerves got the best of her on the day yet she will be back I am sure. Eva came on in relief and worked 3 innings giving up 0 earned runs on 2 hits with 0 walk, 1 hpb, and 1 strike outs, a great closing effort.

Women Division 2 vs. Footscray won 15-0

A fantastic day for baseball as we travelled to Footscray for a match up against the Doggies and the day was one of those out of a story book as the Lady D’s thumped Footscray with some stellar defensive plays and outhitting the Doggies 17-3.

We started off with a bang as we scored 6 in the first dig on 4 hits and a couple of walks with some great base running whereby we held them and left the bases full in the bottom half. Second inning was quiet whilst the third we struck again scoring the maximum 7 runs on 6 hits, we tacked on a couple more in the 5th to round out the scoring. We had 2 double plays on the day with Alice catching a hard hit line drive in left field with the bases full and firing it in to 2nd base to catch the runner off the bag. Another hard hit line drive being snared by Eva at short and tossing to 1st to double off the runner there. A great game defensively as we made no errors on the day and came up with some great plays when we needed them, great effort gals.

Charmaine got the start for the Lady D’s and went 3 innings giving up 0 earned runs on 0 hits with 6 walks and 2 strike outs, a great day for the veteran, just need to work on the ball to strike ratio a bit. Leah came on in relief and worked 2 innings giving up 0 earned runs on 3 hits with 2 walks, 0 hpb, and 1 strike out, a good closing effort after struggling at the start but then finding her rhythm.

Summary:

Hits: Eva & Glenda - 3, Jess S., Alice, Kylie & Mel – 2, Jessica W., Charmaine Megan & Bec – 1

Women Division 3 v Doncaster - lost 7–4

In our first midweek game for the season, the ladies nervously faced a youthful looking Doncaster side with great gusto. It was always going to be tricky, with the Dragons known for being tough to beat, but the girls put in a great fight.

Doncaster came out to score 7 in the first dig, so from the get-go we had our work cut out for us. We answered with 1 run and then 2 in the following dig, and then keeping them scoreless for the rest of the game. We scored one more in the last and unfortunately, due to light, the game was called.

Hayley got the start for us and struggled a little giving up 7 in the first, with 8 walks and 1 strike out. She then fought back in the 2nd to give up 0 runs with two strikeouts and one walk. Leah came in to relieve her, going 1.5 digs, giving up 0 runs with two walks.

The girls came out fighting with the bats, with 9 hits over all; unfortunately we just weren’t able to convert them into enough runs to get over the top of the Dragons. Kate made a beautiful running catch in centre field, Hayley had two great pop fly catches in the infield and as always Meredith was a star behind the plate. The story of the night though was Betty, who faced 10 pitches from Erin Collis in one at-bat. She watched one strike, 3 balls and fouled off 6 pitches before unfortunately getting thrown out at first base. Great work Betty!

The result could have been a different if not for a couple of poor decisions by the “L-plater” coach that impacted the overall result. We face Springvale at home this Saturday and are looking to secure another win to get back to 2-2 and stay in the race.

Women Division 3 v Sandringham - lost 5 –4

Yet another fabulous day for baseball, mother nature put on a real show for us. Coming off the back of a first round win, the girls were excited at the prospect of backing it up.

We struggled with the bat against Sandy’s starting pitcher. She had a lot more movement in her pitches than the girls had faced in practice or even in the previous week against Sunshine. Despite this, the top order got the job done and scored us one run in the first, and Sandy responded with two, off one hit and two walks.

Going into the bottom of the 5th inning at 4-a-piece, we were just hoping for a draw after our bottom order had struggled further with the bat. Unfortunately for us Sandy scored their winning run on a passed ball and the game was over.

Jac got the start, and while she struggled to find her form initially, she fought back to throw more strikes than balls in the end, going three digs: giving up 4 runs on 1 hit, with 7 walks and 1 strikeout. Hayley came on in relief – in her first game back for Melbourne after maternity leave – and showed real fight, going 1.5 innings, only giving up 1 run with no hits, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Again it was a good fielding performance from the girls, with only three errors throughout the game. With some more work on batting hopefully we can get on top of Doncaster this Tuesday and be back in the race.

Little League Major Fright Dodgers defeat Blackburn 12-8

The crowd went wild as the Team donned their gear, practiced their bat swings, stretched and limbered up. “What a cracking practice swing that new boy, Blake has “ , exclaimed one parent. Coach Helder issued the directives and the team jumped into action. Tate put on the ‘catcher’s clobber’ for the first time ever and the team looked bigger and stronger than last season. Plenty of vocal support was evident from the massive crowd on the hill, (despite the fact the B2HACS were not there in full force- B2HACS stands for Blonde haired, Blue eyed,(x2) and champagne swilling) but pleasingly there was also brilliant companionship support from within the team. Great pitching, batting, fielding and catching was very evident. The Opposition had good depth to their pitching…But as Coach Helder said “ I don’t want to see you walk…I want to see you pull the trigger”… and my goodness, the team responded. A resounding win and the highlights were;

• Jasper- a very classy run, cracked the ball out of the diamond and great fielding.
• Blake M- so close to hitting the ball out of the ground. Top back up work too to especially @ 1st base.
• Ben- a stunning double catch outside the diamond and great runs.
• Tom - smashed the leather several times and some brilliant fielding.
• Koby- fabulous fielding at 1st base, & some massive hits and runs.
• Hudson- Hit of the century- home run- hugely confidence building! And terrific pitching.
• Tate- brilliant catching for the first time! Made great contact and runs on board.
• Billy- a stunning hit only to be run out at 1st base and some flashy fielding.
• Blake Mc- scintillating pitching and one monster hit only to be caught in the outer field. Runs.

The start to the season is highly promising. The team displayed tenacity and the fruits of solid training on Tuesday nights are already starting to flow through. A great team effort. Thanks to Coach Helder, guidance from assistant coach Hartin and Craig for his proficiency in setting up.
