If you have any match reports, junior, senior, men, women, masters, social, anything, send it in to demonsbc@yahoo.com by 9pm Tuesdays to get into the week's issue.

Dear FIRSTNAME,

On the field, it was a tough weekend with teams having mixed results across the Saturday and Sunday due to player availability, however the Men's Thirds and Fifths had good wins as well as the Masters and Womens teams.

Junior results were good again and we have a full compliment of games this weekend with T-Ball smash starting tonight at Surrey Park 6PM, ages from 6 years and up. Come down for a fun night of games and activities.

Match Reports

5th Nine Round 3 v Waverley won 9-8

Some of the Melbourne fans left early and we came back to win the game with a walk-off hit in the bottom of the 6th.

Down 2 in the bottom of the 5th, Lachlan Clayton came to the plate with 2 men on to hit a single to center scoring Ethan VanderHoff and Steve Smedley, tying the game. Lachlan then made his first appearance on the mound to hold Waverly scoreless.

Chao Shih led off the last inning with a triple, representing the winning run at 3rd. Jimmy VanderHoff came to the plate to get intentionally walked. Then Jonte DeZwart battled out a walk to load the bases with no outs. Ethan VanderHoff came to the plate driving the ball to left center to win the game in walk-off fashion.

Highlights:

Charlie Stewart, Jonte DeZwart, Harvey Edmanson and Lachlan Clayton pitching well
Harvey crushing the ball as usual with a 1B, 2B and 1 run
Charlie answering the sac bunt call to reach base safely with a hit and advance the runner
Chao going 2 for 4 with a 2B and a 3B along with the winning run
Jimmy with an RBI 2B
Ethan with a 2B and 1 run along with the game-winning RBI
Steve Smedley going 2 for 3 with a 1B, 2B and a BB
Chris Andrews scoring after a BB and a stolen base

Masters A 38+ defeated Masters B 10-8

Bryce battles thru bruised and battered buttocks as Sean seems smitten by surfaces smattered with stubble!

The local derby between the Masters Over 38 A & B teams was always going to be a close affair and for the four people in the crowd certainly got their money’s worth… We welcomed Craig Mitchell to the fold and Shane filled in for a few innings as Mulgrave’s finest Damo was running late (again ;-). He had a fair excuse and despite his arm hanging from seven innings and a win the day before, we appreciated his effort. The Chairman also stepped in for his first game with his regular team; sorry Burto – we don’t need you yet so stop calling!

Paul Tyndall got the new ball for B’s and we struggled to keep the ball down with Jez snaffling up everything at CF. Lardio took to the mound and spun his magic to get through the first three innings unscathed, but it all started to come unstuck in the fourth when several timely hits to centre right scored a few for the B’s. Bryce got the call up and tried to work through some ‘upper hamstring’ soreness but this took a while to settle down as the B’s kept on scoring though a couple of close plays at first didn’t quite go our way. Clappy came on for the B’s and the spinners switched from the righty to the lefty. We adjusted well and snuck away with a 10-8 win and reckon we hit right down the lineup this week to score runs which is a good sign for the season ahead. Unfortunately we ran out of light which led to Murray forgetting that you need three outs not two to end an innings (rookie error). Top of the table clash at home again v Croydon this Monday night – hopefully Sean has something better to talk about in the dugout this week than ‘body hair’…

The view from the other Masters Team:

It was another slow start to this game. Not scoring any runs til the 3rd innings. But we also knew that the A team was going to come out swinging.
Earning 2 runs in the 1st. 1 run in the 2nd and the 3rd. 2 in the 4th and 4 in the 5th.
But we held our own, getting 3 runs in the 3rd and 5 in the 5th.

Batting: Singles .H.Marsten (2). P.Robinson (2). C.Crameri 3. P.Clapp 1. S.De-Witt 1. G.Graham 1.
Triples. H.Marsten 1. P.Tyndall 1.
Pitching: P.Tyndall 4 innings. 4 earned runs, 6 runs scored. 12 hits
P.Clapp. 2 innings. 2 earned runs, for 6 runs scored. 1 BB. 1HPB. 12 hits.

Errors: Melbourne.B.7. Melbourne. A 2.
A special thanks to Brad Dolan for being the line umpire helping Barry out. But all in all it was a great game played by both sides.
Masters B have a Bye next week.

Masters 45+ defeated Fitzroy 2-0
A tight game with batting difficult into the setting Sun at Merri Park - the difference was our first inning with Andrew Saggers getting on and a couple of well placed hits from Hondo and Randall scored the only 2 runs for the game. Good defence held Fitzroy out from there until the setting Sun halted the game - we played an innings after Sunset and a double play from Hondo to Saggers to Marksy stifled the late threat and we ran out 2-0 winners.

Women’s Division 2 Melbourne Demons vs. Waverly - Won 13 – 12 @ Home

Gee whiz what a tough game as both sides made heaps of errors but our Lady D’s kept their heads up all the way and squeezed out a win. It was evident that the Waverly girls had not been challenged as yet because when we did they couldn’t stand the heat as we outhit the Reds 14-7 coming from behind to steal the W 13-12 in the last dig. Great gutsy effort ladies.

We gave them 2 runs in each of the first 2 digs on 5 errors and 2 walks which wasn’t looking good but they left 2 stranded so could have been worse. We came back with 1 and another 2 in the bottom of the second to keep it close 4-3. The Reds tacked on 4 (2 earned) whilst we added another 2 leaving it 8-5 after 3 innings. We held them in the 4th and the bats exploded scoring the maximum of 7 runs in the bottom of the inning giving us our first lead of the game 12-8. The 5th inning saw them score 4 to tie it 12 all with Eva our #3 hitter coming up to the plate smashing one in to the gap at right centre but a great defensive play held her to 1 base, Kylie came up and got a hit then a wild pitch sent them to second and third when Megan came up and hit one just in front of the plate and as the throw went to first Eva scored the winning run – and the crow goes wild! What a thrilling ending.

Charmaine got the start and went 4 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 5 hits with 4 walks and 2 strike outs, great effort Maine, Eva came in to close it out going 1 inning giving up 1 earned run on 2 hits with 3 walks and 1 strike out, and yet again Kylie behind the plate calling a great game.

Great determination and stamina on the day where most would have given up. It just goes to show you can beat anyone in the league if you keep your head up and keep going for it. Great work Lady D’s.

Summary:

Hits: Bec - 3, Alice, Jess S., Megan & Leah– 2, Eva, Charmaine & Kylie – 1

RBIs: Bec, Meagan, Leah, Charmaine & Jess S. – 2, Alice, Kylie & Glenda - 1

Melbourne Demons vs. Bundoora Women’s Division 2 - Won 8 – 1 @ Bundoora

Midweek games – not sure on this one for the Ladies as we are trialling it this year as it is difficult for everyone to get to a 6:00pm start especially knowing early in the year you will not get in much game time, we’ll see how it goes. Always a good day for baseball still as we travelled to Bundoora for a match up against the Brumbies, the day being a bit cool and breezy as the Lady D’s had a solid day on defence as Charmaine was solid at short, Megan unflappable at second, Mel having a good day at third with Jess W. scooping everything up at first and Alice, Jess S. and Leah taking all of the catches that came their way in the outfield. Everyone did their part to put this one in the win column 8-1 outhitting the Brumbies 11-2.

We started off rather slow as we were unable to put anything together with the bats until the 3rd dig where we put on 3 runs on 2 hits with a triple by Alice who smashed the ball all day. The 4th dig saw us doing the same as we tacked on another 4 with 6 hits and some great base running. In the sixth we added another on a couple of hits to round out the scoring. The Brumbies were putting the ball in play in different fields all day but our defence made all the plays bar one with everyone getting in to the action. Great effort backing up the pitcher and each other.

Eva went the distance for the Lady D’s having a great day out going 6 innings giving up 0 earned runs on 2 hits with 2 walks and 7 strike outs, an awesome day for the veteran, a pleasure to watch with Kylie behind the plate calling a great game.

We will need to put together a game like this against Waverley this weekend to ensure we can stay in the game with a chance to come away with a win.

Summary:

Hits: Alice - 3, Jess S. & Leah – 2, Jessica W., Eva, Glenda, Charmaine & Kylie – 1

RBIs: Alice – 4, Eva – 2, Leah & Glenda - 1

Women Division 3 v Springvale – Won 10-8 @ Home

Overdue for a win, the Div 3 girls came out swinging, showing grit and determination when it counted, to come out on top of the Lions.

With Mel getting the start, we gave up 2 runs in the first, on one walk, a HPB and two strikeouts. We came back to score two of our own and levelled it up going into the second dig. With almost everyone in the side scoring a run, we had a great day with the bats. With only one strike out for the day, we were seeing the ball well and capitalising on the consistent but loopy Springvale pitching.

We gave up 4 in the 3rd, but kept pushing, kept stealing, and kept scoring runs to keep a hungry Springvale at bay and secure the win. Mel went the distance, going 5 innings with 6 strikeouts, 5 walks, 3 HPB and only giving up 1 unearned run. Great job Mel!

The Melbourne bats were singing, with 10 hits, and we were back in our base stealing “groove” this week, which is something we need to keep pushing forward with if we want to stay competitive in the competition. KJ got her first ever hit, which is a great reward for all the hard work she’s been putting in outside of training.

Again we only made one fielding error for the day. Kate had a superb game in centre field, taking two great running catches, both times ending Springvale’s time at bat. Betty had some great put-outs at first base and Jac, while having a week off from pitching, was reliable for us at third base.

Due to an unfortunate draw, we face Springvale again this Saturday. Hopefully we can fight just as hard again and secure another good win.

Summary:

Hits: Kate -2, Meredith, Marnie, Jacqui, Melanie, Sue, Tori, KJ, Hayley - 1

RBIs: Kate & Mel -2, Marnie, Sue, Tori & Hayley - 1

Under 12 Dodgers - Melbourne A, defeats Upwey 15-5

This was a tough match on which to write a ‘constructive’ comment. Needless to say that Hartin’s Heroes ( Melbourne ‘A’ Dodgers) comfortably came home with the bacon ! Darren can be proud of his game plan. Had Coach Helder not been interstate, then Helder’s Heroes , would have come home with the beef jerky! We look forward to Coach Helder’s return this Friday, at our homeground, alongside Assistant coach Hartin. Who knows,…we might even have a return of the BMC- (the Blonde Mother’s Club) .

Back to reality. Yes, a great effort, 15-5, marred by a few incidences. The match lacked opposition substance. It was difficult to isolate ‘star batters’ because, more often than not, opposition pitching fell 10 foot short of the plate. In Chris’s terminology, ‘the opportunity to pull the trigger’ was scarce and instead we were forced to walk… and walk. But, having said that, a few eye catching hits came from Henry, Jasper, Koby, Tom, Blake & Tate. Hudo belted one over the boundary again! Each team member scored runs. Ben did some good work on the field as well and I saw excellent fielding from Billy. Pitching wise, the opposition didn’t get a run against Blake. Tom followed up with some fine accuracy and Blake M. “the bullet”, also scorched the ball into the catcher’s glove. Nice work from catchers Henry and Tate. Well Done Dodgers…a convincing win against modest opposition.

Thanks to Ric for scoring…& Craig and Steve for their guiding wisdom. We are at home ground next Friday. See you there at 5-30pm sharp. With the warmer weather approaching, we might see the BMC there in force, being vocal, attired in their cheerleader outfits, munching on hotdogs and apple pie.
