Melbourne Baseball Club to host Little League Championship
Baseball Victoria is pleased to announce that Melbourne Baseball Club will be the host venue for the Baseball Victoria 2014 State Little League Championships. The championships will take place from 11 – 13 April 2014 at Surrey Park, Surrey Drive, Box Hill.
Neale Price, the CEO of Baseball Victoria, is very enthusiastic about holding the event at Melbourne Baseball Club.
“Baseball Victoria is excited to be holding the State Little League Championships at Melbourne Baseball Club. Melbourne Baseball Club has a great facility, and we are looking forward to working with the club on making this a successful event. We couldn’t be happier to be able to hold this event at such a great facility”, said Mr Price.
“The Little League Championship is an important event on our calendar, and is an extremely important program within the development pathway both within Victoria and within the Australia juniors landscape. The winner of our state championships has the potential to go on and represent Australia at the Little League World Series in the USA in August, which is played in front of 30,000 people and is televised around the world on ESPN - an amazing opportunity for the players involved.”
David Keyhoe, President of the Melbourne Baseball Club, said "We are honoured and proud to be partnering with Baseball Victoria to hold the Victorian Little League Baseball Championships in 2014 at our club."
"As one of the oldest baseball clubs in Australia we understand better than anyone that developing junior level baseball is critical to longevity and success in the sport." David said. "We spend a lot of time and resources developing our juniors. We have an excellent program from T-ball to junior state league and an active mentoring program to support our juniors as they develop into Division 1 players and possibly higher levels. "
Steve Pahos, a club committee member commented "With significant numbers of under 12 players at our club and surrounds, having a competition like this that provides a pathway to the levels that the kids aspire to is really important to us."
David Keyhoe adds "We have excellent facilities at Surrey and these have been developed by the club in collaboration with the Whitehorse council. Without the council’s support these sorts of events would be held in other areas, taking focus away from these great fields and facilities." "We look forward to the community joining us in April and we wish all participants the best of reward".
The State Little League Championships will see 5 teams from around Victoria participating, with the top teams qualifying for the National Championships to be held on the Gold Coast in June 2014. The winner of the National Championships qualifies to represent Australia at the Little League World Series which is held each year in August in Williamsport, USA.
